KING PRINCESS: [Talking about the Cheap Queen album cover] I was feeling super sad when it all happened... you know, gay stuff. I think that might have been the shoot where I was sobbing the whole time, but it ended up being so gorgeous! Somebody needs to come and punch me in the cooch every time I need to take a photo because I look amazing sad! I kept going back to it and I was like "This photo is so interesting and I love the way I look because it feels... good. People like to say that drag, female impersonation, it’s just a matter of performance, when it really isn't so much costume as it is, but highlighting and emphasizing a part of yourself.” CHARLI: Did you come up with the title Cheap Queen pre or post that photograph? KING PRINCESS: I believe I came up with it post, because I found myself thinking a lot about that term. I do love it, a “cheap queen” is kinda like a thrifty, and I really feel this about myself. I am somebody who is resourceful. You know... I make it work! And I think that, especially during that time, I really didn’t know much about this industry being in it, and I was not feeling comfortable in my body a lot. So I remember feeling that I was using this armor to keep going, this cheap queen mentality, like "Ok you got this bitch, you’ll gonna be alright!".
