Nerd Rant: Get Your Dates Right
So here I am, sitting in the local chain coffee shop while Pants runs errands reading a book that Princess failed to return to an ex.
Of all the possessions that get mixed up in a breakup, books are my favorite.
So I'm happily reading this book about several generations of historians, with some focus on the Ottoman Empire's relationship with Wallachia during the 15th Century. Okay, the book is about Dracula. Yes, that Dracula. The vampire one. But there are some important scenes that take place in Istanbul.
Here I am, happily absorbed in these tales of diving through Ottoman Archives. Çok Güzel! And then author has the audacity to write:
Three scrolls were inventories of taxes levied on the people of Anat0lia by Sultan Mehmed II. The last of them listed taxes collected from the cities of Sarajevo and Skopje... Below it, a faintly scratched date seared the thing into my brain: 1490.
And with those four numbers I go tumbling out of my delightful gothic wonderland into nerd rage. If these were suppose to be documents collected during Sultan Mehmet Fatih's regin, then the latest they could have been collected was 1481, but 1480 would be a safer date. If it was important that this date was after Vlad the Impaler was buried, 1480 is just fine. Or they could have been taxes collected during Bayezid II's reign. That is fine, too. 1490 works for that.
And so now I'm all distracted by this little thing that I had to put my book down, doubt my own memory and Wiki the dates, and completely distracted from what was previously a delightful read. Especially when the author makes a good reference to the fact that tax collectors in the Ottoman Empire, under their tax farming system, were non-Muslims. UGH!
Authors, check your stuff. Self, check your priorities.

The Festivals of the Lord - PENTECOST
These days are special to me personally because these are dates that were not instituted by man but by God Himself. That alone is what drives me to press to learn more about them and to be present before the Lord for them. NOTE: Pentecost always falls on Sivan 6. Just like your birthday always remains the same. While the day you were born changes because every year the date falls on a different…
