An ultra extended flowchart for identifying dynasties! Even identifying sub-periods of each dynasty. As always, this is a general guide ther
does the makeup look sad or happy? >>> goth & sad >>> middle tang dynasty [lmao]
« Encore une fois cette chanson triste »
Et puis c'est comme tu n'existe plus : which, as it turned out, is not the correct quote, but -
Anyway, I'm already tired of dodging spoilers, so I’m off to watch GO s3.
Hopefully, between 'Follow You Heart' I’m unexpectedly enjoying and a theatre ticket for tomorrow, I’ll have enough brain bleach to deal with the aftermath.
UPD: So, in a way, that was even cheaper and lazier than I'd imagined; (un)fortunately, I truly don't seem to care anymore 😌
'Ya She': Deus ex Machina
Speaking of Hikaru, another thing I really like about the live-action version of ‘Ya She’ is that it didn't pull a Hikaru-no Go on me.
I mean, it was pretty obvious from the beginning that the bittersweet but logical ending would be
>SPOILERS<
'Ya She': deviation
I don't necessarily like any of Su Beilu’s historical outfits all that much. What I truly feel excited about are
a) layered robes;
b) crazy make-your-face-acquainted-with-the-pavement shoes (although an article I've read suggests those actually are meant to *prevent* you from tripping over your own multiple-layer robes);
c) the showy pendant that Bi Zhi – and not Su Beilu – is wearing;
d) sensible compression routine as shown in this vid (which would be from a different era entirely, but none of the dozen screenshots I've taken truly shows me what's going on in Su Beilu’s trouser department).
Also, once I made my bookverse Bi Zhi full- (well, 1/6) scaled, I vaguely intended to make my Hikaru doll (who has been, very fanon-compliantly, waiting for me to give Sai a new body) stand in for Su Beilu. But then I managed to snatch one of Mattel’s generic Asian faces for half price; it would save me the trouble of trying to hide Hikaru's bleached bangs (the headpiece being one more thing that I actually like about Su Beilu’s outfit).
Unfortunately, that Generic Asian Face doesn't look like Su Beilu at all. And, since they are no longer a matching set anyway, maybe I won't bother with any semblance of historical accuracy expected from 'Ya She', and dive directly into over-the-top (pure) fantasy outfits.
Might change the palette to avoid association with any specific character (but is it my fault those two peacocks also prefer my favorite colour?)
Bi Zhi (bookverse; with a little bit of cartoon)
As you can see, I couldn't stop myself from buying the sword (still want to make one, eventually, but it's just so pretty🤗). And then I found a fake-Chinese coin in my pile of possibly-useful junk that would make a convincing fish-patterned mirror, – and the project truly grew out of proportion. So, when my elsewhere doll community made ‘Stuffed Toy’ the topic of the week, I decided I might just as well complete this image now and think about what I want to do next later.
'Ya She' in progress: Accessories
First, fitting a coat to a stuffed rabbit, let alone a tiny one, is freaking hard!
And, secondly, since the book specifically says the coat was red, I absolutely had to dig to the bottom of my coffre to retrieve the sad remnants of Enjolras’ outfit I botched somewhere around 2015 and never got around to fixing.
I still want to make a sword, although the copper-coloured parts I have handy are too showy for the deceptive simplicity of this design:
(can always order one from actual China, but where would be the fun of it?😋)
'Ya She' in progress: plotholes
Ouch, I've got to the point where several chapters are missing from the translation 😨
I noticed a while ago, and wasn't overly concerned, since 80% of the book consist of 'a story behind an atrifact that may or may not be referenced later + a brief cameo from one or two main characters';
however, it seems that this time some significant plot development snuck in while the translator - and, therefore, I - weren't watching😫
'Ya She' in progress: Mutant Sheep Unicorn of Justice
'Lu Zigang paid no attention to the Doctor's rambling. He was also looking up information.
A body like a sheep, a head like a qilin, with a single horn on its forehead... That was the Xie Zhi?! And why was it that he saw nothing at all, while the Doctor could see it? Could the rumor that only those of ultimate goodness could see the Xie Zhi be true?'
So, yep, fantastic beasts mystical animals also officially exist in 'Ya She' batshit crazy bookverse🤗 Now I'm kind of embarrassed I only know what a qilin is due to that silly film.
'Ya She' in progress: Time Travel (Yeah, they've got that too)
A Time-Travelling Museum curator*: No, Doctor, you absolutely can't save the person bleeding out in front of our eyes. What if it disrupts the space-time continuum? (neatly repacks books spilling out of the overturned truck to make sure they don't get any further damage)
_____________
*but not Bi Zhi; and not 'The Curator' either 🙃
correction: local time-traveling man suffering from extreme loneliness breaks the timeline numerous for the first TWO people who smiled at him who just also happen to look the same
I was going to point out how Bi Zhi’s devastating loneliness makes sense in the book, but in the live-action series’ altered premises, nothing is actually stopping him from making friends in his own timeline.
But then I tried to remember the last time I had an IRL conversation that was not work-related.
At least human interaction *is* in my job description.
The translation I watched weirdly described Bi Zhi’s job as something like ‘historical city builder’; which, I assume, refers to making those virtual reality simulations surrounding his place from all sides.
But even being a garden-variety architect largely translates into staring at AutoCAD for 8 hours a day.
So, there is, indeed, little reason ‘to drink *indulge in unhealthy habit of our choice* less and go outside more’, and we are not even in the future yet.
Well, at least from this point of view it’s clear why Bi Zhi and Qin Ziyi immediately hit it off.
Also, Connor Leong (or so imdb tells me) must be a great actor, since at no point, not even in that e30 secret farewell scene, did I feel Qin Ziyi and Su Beilu were the same person 🤩
dates back to early years
@melodic-chemical made me think, so -
My parents were never going to buy me a barbie doll, and I didn't use to be fond of dolls as a child, but my sister got one as a birthday present from a distant relative, so, naturally, I had to have one too.
My grandmother, who vehemently opposed to barbie dolls on principle but never missed a chance to show her favoritism towards me, found a creative solution of giving me a Skipper doll: which meant no breasts, no toothy grin, no bendable knees, flat feet and no shoes – what a disappointment. I wasn't particularly sad when its head broke off merely two months later.
However, once I did get into my doll hobby, I found myself exclusively drawn to dolls under 27centimetres with closed-mouth smile. I still look down on those which have less than 15 ball joints, but that's because I need them to have one in their ankle – in order to put them into heelless shoes.
Look! The red dragon design in his clothes is actually alive. So cool!!
So, I did not completely make that up.
Also, he definitely wears different outfits throughout history. None of them seem to be cut from the same cloth.
One of them has no dragon in sight.
Both of them clearly show there is no scar on his neck😋
'Ya She' in progress: the Rabbit
Meanwhile, the Rabbit has got a fetching red coat. I was going to just reuse the one I’d put on my schoolgirl!Kitty’s bag, but clearly it is not enough anymore.
Of course,

'Ya She' in progress: Immortality
You know what, one would say that
a character's immortal body can be either so resilient it somehow managed to reattach its severed head,
or technically dead and in need of magical closes to stave off decomposing.
But, in batshit crazy ‘Ya She’ bookverse, why not both?
Can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with 2 more immortals thrown in🙃
The Company | Back to 2024
Speaking of a convenient excuse to go over the series again, gleefully obsessing over Gao Weiguang’s outfits.
No need to bother with screenshots for e1 now.
IDK why it’s so funny to me, but it is:
'The character 韘 is pronounced 'shè,' got it? Its shape isn't easy to remember either – go write it a hundred times!'
