Many spring flowers shut up their petals when it rains but this plant doesn’t worry about that - it’s petals always point straight down. This checkered lily had to be ‘coerced’ into showing off it’s reproductive parts by wrapping it around the stem of a taller neighbor. 

No less an informed source than Wikipedia lists twelve common names for this European plant including: snake's head fritillary, snake's head (the original English name), chess flower, frog-cup, guinea-hen flower, guinea flower, leper lily (because its shape resembled the bell once carried by lepers), Lazarus bell, checkered lily, checkered daffodil, drooping tulip or, in the British Isles, simply fritillary.

Whew! Twelve different common names. That must be some kind of a record.
