Koko, who quietly sits a to-go order on your desk after a lunch meeting with clients before disappearing into his office.
Koko, who gives you a large piece of clear quartz to "help you stay focused and concentrate" while you work. He has a similar piece on his own desk.
Koko, who keeps an extra umbrella in his office because you keep forgetting yours. He claims it's more efficient than listening to you apologize every time it rains.
Koko, who asks you to take care of his cat when he's away on business. He doesn't want to hire a pet sitter because "she likes you."
Koko, who asks you to accompany him to dinners and business events because he trusts your judgment. He tells himself it's because you're competent. That's only half the reason.
Koko, who orders vitamins for you during flu season so you stay healthy. He doesn't want to answer his emails and take calls himself if you're out sick.
Koko, who would rather schedule a root canal than admit he actually cares about you.

… In the cities underworld,
loyalty is worth more than money,
and losing a race can cost more than pride.
And bonten learnt that years ago.

PROLOGUE / BLURB OF FIRST CHAPTER
Tokyo Japan, welcomed you back like an old, healed scar. You couldn’t ignore it, no matter how much you tried to; it crawled back, incredibly familial and aching.
After 3 years of studying abroad, within the neighbouring country, the infamous heart of South Korea; chasing a void of fueling purpose that no longer filled once you poured it. returning home to Tokyo, felt less like closure and more like a surrender. Your dreams didn’t feel accomplished, but merely a dull, thud against your heart, wondering when it’ll ever break through.
Your beloved, but most important annoying cousin, takeomi, was your only constant variable since you left tokyo at 19, only a few tedious months after Highschool Graduation. The opportunity to run, well, fly, was far more easier than staying. Ridding everything behind that you somewhat built, with a belief system that the grass was greener over the other side.

And now here you are, standing in the middle of Haneda Airport, waiting impatiently for takeomi to call you, directing you where he is to pick you up. Because well, he’s the only thing you have left here, home. the taste of that word felt empty on your tongue. you were back at first base, where you promised yourself that you wouldnt come back to once you stepped foot on the soil of land millions of kilometres away from you. Nonetheless you’ve achieved that…to an extent, you thought maybe, just maybe you would return later than JUST 3 years. it was bittersweetly horrifying.

- FIC INFORMATION -
UNDERGROUND RACING TEAMS INFO
———————————————————————————
THE BONTEN ENIGMAS :
manjiro sano (mikey) THE LEADER: drives a matte black Nissan GT-R R35. TOP 3 of the underground racing scene, he’s vicious but chilled, ultimately drives like he owns any road or corner he takes, weathering other racers with his exceptional ability and skills.
sanzu haruchiyo SECOND IN COMMAND: Drives a white chrome Porsche 911 Turbo S (992). He’s a reckless, but definently a captivating, meticulous driver. he has a bad reputation of focusing more on taking out his opponents then actually winning races, because he thinks it’s humorous for the audience.
Kakucho Hitto THIRD IN COMMAND: drives a silver BMW M4 Competition (G82). The most cautious driver, but don’t be fooled, he can get aggressive pretty easily if someone clips or knicks his precious supercar in a race. He’s also a complete strategist.
Hajime Kokonoi THE DRIFTER: drives a wine red Toyota GR Supra (A90). he’s suprisingly calm, calculated and impossibly controlled… he makes every drift look intentional with passion, whilst everyone else fights to stay on the road. the precision on this guy would waiver you.
Ran Haitani THE WILDCARD: drives a midnight purple metallic Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. he’s unpredictable really, and very theatrical. He race more on instinct, rather than strategy, much unlike kakucho. He’s a risk taker, not even his team can predict or guess his next move. He gets bored easily, and loves the chase of his own passion.
Rindou Haitani THE TECHMACHINE: drives a hot pink McLaren 570S (are we surprised?) he doesn’t race as much as the others, but don’t paint him wrong, when he drives. It’s a show. But, he’d rather be on the sidelines, modifying the cars, treating it more like science. he relies more on his understanding of physics and engineering to race and adjust, he’s basically a secret tyrant.
Akashi Takeomi THE MECHANIC: drives a yellow Chevrolet Corvette C8 Z06 (your cousin btw). He knows every bolt, every wire, every flaw beneath the hood. If something falls apart, breaks, or fails, he’s got it fixed before anyone notices. He rarely drives, and focuses more on fixing the others cars than being on the road itself. The members value his speed, care and a crazy eye of attention to detail.
———————————————————————————
THE MANJI VIPERS :
Ken Ryuguji (draken) THE LEADER: drives a black and white Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS. He’s much like Mikey on the road, also in the TOP 3. He’s more passive aggressive, and doesn’t mind dabbling in wrecking his rivals, like the bonten enigmas, as much as they are ‘friendly’.. outside of racing, he makes sure to dominate the roads when it’s game time.
Mitsuya Takashi SECOND IN COMMAND/ACE: drives a forest green chrome Audi R8 V10 Performance. He’s a sweetheart on the outside, but as soon as he steps into the drivers seat? Oh, he’s not even in your vision anymore. He’s smooth, almost silent as he closing in on whoever’s behind, infront, or next to him on the road. he can do anything, hot laps, drifting, bumper to bumper, etc.
Kazutora Hanemiya THE REAPER: drives a black and yellow Lotus Emira V6. He’s a total pain to be up against, people think he’s insane. But..a more tamer driver version of sanzu. He focuses more on smashing and banging up opponents in races, reckless and dangerous to be even a few meters near him on the road. But he’s also very calculated, and can ‘lock in’ when it comes to serious races.
Keisuke Baji THE SPEED DEMON: drives a metallic orange Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. He drives like G-force doesn’t exist at all, and accelerates until his foot is sore. His opponents, even teammates, second guess themselves when they drive against or with him.
Matsuno Chifuyu THE SLEEPER: drives a gold Mitsubishi Evo IX. He’s underrated mostly, given his name. he only just fairly got recruited, and is a renown prodigy now. He doesn’t race as much as draken or the others, but when he does, he mostly wins, especially in drift laps. he treats the road like his personal canvas.
Seishu inui THE MECHANIC: drives a white Ford Mustang Dark Horse. He may be ‘young’, but his hands work like they’ve been modifying and fixing up cars before time was figured out. When any of his teams members get wrekt in a race, he immediately starts repairing, ordering replacements, and is respected by his peers. He barely races, he cares too much about cars, like they are his prized possession.
———————————————————————————
THE BLOOD PHANTOMS: (this team makes no sense I’m sorry)
Izana Kurokawa THE LEADER: drives a red Ferrari 488 GTB. He drives like he’s murderous, and not literally fortunately, but that’s his style. Aggressive. Powerful. He’s also in the TOP 3. He wants to dominate any race track or road his car is on. He’s careless for others, all he focuses on is being the best, and only the best.
Takemichi Hanagaki SECOND IN COMMAND: drives a purple Aston Martin DB11 AMR. As much as he’s second in command, he’s not the.. best.. driver. Let’s just put it that way. He’s trusted with the logistics of his team, rather than the road itself. He’s powerful outside of the tracks.
Shuji Hanma THE PREDATOR: drives a matte black Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. He’s the wealthiest in his team, and is a GREAT gambler, mainly for sponsors. But shit, his driving is crazily strategical. He’s impulsive for sure, but he uses that ability to perform cuts, drifts, and overtaking that would have you furrowing your eyebrows.
Hakkai Shiba THE ANGEL/MECHANIC: drives a blue Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo. He drives cautiously, precisely, and doesn’t bother in attacking his opponents. He prefers straight races, that require less tactical skill and control. He’s also the mechanic, but he’s more tedious on fixing and repairing, as they’d rather just ‘buy’ replacement cars instead.
Wakasa Imaushi THE LAUNCH KING: drives a purple pagani Zonda LH 670. he’s the first to be in first place, he never suffers from whiplash with how fast his car launches from the starting position. But he faults 50/50, it either pushes him for the podium, but can get lost back behind. He’s like a coin, he either dominates or lays back, until something in him growls to beat the pursuit.
———————————————————————————
there is more teams, such as
THE FINAL SAINTS, THE LEVIATHANS, THE VANTA AXIOMS, and THE KUROHANA ECHELONS.
However they less focused on, as they have no ‘significance’ yet until later in the chapters.

I am just going over/editing the chapters I’ve already written, and I’ll post around 5 chapters a week :) the chapters will be quite long, I like to yap and detail as much as I can. also, if any of you like kpop, I’ll be doing a parallel of this fic kind of, for kpop aswell in the future. Please let me know your thoughts, (if this gets any views or likes at all) and if you guys want multiple endings and who’d you wanna end up with the most, I am unbiased because this is a work in progress !! :)
Featuring: Sanzu, Ran and Rindou, Koko, Kakucho, Takeomi, and Mocchi
You go out for drinks with the Bonten boys. One drink turns into a few, which then turns into several. You all end up at a karaoke bar.
Drunk Sanzu, who isn't far from his baseline. Fortunately, he's in a good mood, so there's less likelihood of someone dying tonight.
Drunk Koko, who turns into an overgrown cat. His head is in your lap and you swear you can almost hear him purring as your fingers gently card through his hair.
Drunk Ran, who fancies himself a smooth tenor. He sounds more like a wounded walrus than a legendary crooner.
Drunk Mocchi, who falls asleep propped up in the corner. He's snoring so loud that it almost drowns out Ran's singing. Almost.
Drunk Takeomi, who is texting everyone he knows. It's not a good idea. He won't remember any of it unless he looks at his message history.
Drunk Kakucho, who apologizes to the bartender every time someone else does something embarrassing. By the end of the night, he's apologized twelve times and none of it was his fault.
Drunk Rindou, who quietly slinks away, pulling you along with him. Singing isn't his thing. Just give him the DJ booth and he's happy.
🍸Eventually, Sanzu drags Ran outside, still holding the mic and his drink, before someone calls animal control.

Your nails tapped against the hardwood desk. The sound soothed the thrum of nerves buzzing beneath your skin as you stared at the photo's scattered across the desk.
A picture says more than a thousand words, indeed.
With a gentle touch, you picked up one of the clearer photo's. Your--apparently, former-- money making treasure trove shaking hands with the devil. You wondered what he'd paid him. For the boy to switch sides so readily, knowing his life would be on the line, had to have been quite a steep price.
A small smile curved on your lips, eyes latching on to the intricate details of Koko's hair. Of his tattoo. Of his designer clothes. A huff of laughter slipped through your teeth and shook your shoulders just slightly.
Gucci.
That had to be against the script.
You spun your chair around, flicking your wrist. The picture floated into the flames, erasing the proof of betrayal with it. It didn't matter, after all. Maybe it was even a good thing the boy switched sides.
That way he'd be caught on Bonten's side, not yours.
And you'd have full control over the narrative. Just how you liked it.
Tomorrow's raid could either make or break your career. If all went according to plan, Bonten would never see it coming. You'd have seized their assets, arrested the lot of them and gained a monopoly of the Japanese drug trade within a couple of hours.
There was only one the matter of your former accomplice. However, experience over the years told you it'd be fine. After all, no one ever believed the criminal. Especially when the criminal was part of Bonten and said organization had been a headache for the better part of a decade now.
If that headache was because they blocked the higher ups' own business or simply because someone actually still had a conscious in this building... Well, that doesn't matter, does it?
A smirk pulled at your lips as you watched the flames flicker.
As the last embers died, you rose to your feet. You replaced the ashes with new firewood. You checked the automated ignition hidden in a small alcove in the heard, turning the nozzle slightly.
Your eyes glanced out the window to see a full moon rising before you shut the curtains and made your way to bed.
Nothing could stop you. Tomorrow you'd rise from the ashes he left behind when he burned down the world you thought you'd rule together.
Something stirred deep inside your heart.
The thrill of vengeance, you thought.
There was nothing else it could be.
***
The screeching of tires rang through the business district, announcing the breaking of dawn. Car doors slammed as men in dark suits and men in tactical gear surrounded Bonten's building. Tension as thick as your boss's foundation hung in the air.
Your heart hammered in your chest, your blazer moving just slightly with every beat. As you leaned against the van, arms crossed, one finger tapping against your blazer, you glanced to your boss standing beside the unit's commanding officer.
You could only wait.
Wait for the moment the unit had secured the building and the fraud division could move in.
Wait until you'd see him for the first time in years.
Wait for the cocky little smirk to be wiped off his face.
Minutes went by.
The grip on your arms got tighter, brows creasing as you glanced down at your watch. You shifted your weight. It shouldn't be long now. If all went to plan, they should be done apprehending Bonten any second--
A crackle sounded through your earpiece.
Just one word.
"Clear."
That's when you moved. A calm settled in your chest. Your breathing slowed down, hands steady as you grabbed your bag and followed your boss and the commanding officer into the building.
Your heels clicked on the marble floor, the sound slicing through the silence like bullets. Their red soles matching the exact shade of your lips. Your suit, tailored to perfection, seemed to be set alight as the sun's rays bounced off the vibrant red.
Prada.
As it should've been all along.
You saw him the second you rounded the corner.
The way his jaw ticked when the agent closest to him announced the arrival of the fraud division. The way his gaze dragged up your body until he met your eyes and realized who now stood before him. His breath caught for just a fraction. You noticed. You know he did too.
A smirk lifted the corner of his lips. Tongue poking out with a forced nonchalance. The same nonchalance he'd always had. Effortless confidence looking suspiciously like the frail arrogance of a man driven into a corner by the woman he'd discarded without a care.
You're sure he cared now, though.
You watched as he tracked the tip of your tongue run along your lips. Your eyes darkened, smirk stretching into a wicked grin.
A quick glance around showed the abhorrent lack of attention. Everyone too busy seizing the assets, gaining access to the systems. Unknowingly, stupidly, giving you access to everything.
"Your system is working perfectly," the intern said as he leaned back in the office chair. He grinned as he looked at you.
A colleague laughed. "Yeah, no overtime for us."
The rest of the division laughed along, murmuring about what to do with all that free time. Conversation flowed, attention dropped. Everything followed the script.
Kokonoi frowned. You watched something shift behind his eyes. A flash of something. Anger. Calculation. Realization.
Fear.
When his lips parted, no words came out.
A first for him, you're sure.
His hands clenched into fists. Body rigid as his eyes scanned the room. As if seeing the reality of the situation clearly for the first time.
"The devil's due comes for everyone," you said, voice barely above a whisper.
Your hand lifted. You let your manicured nail drag down his cheek, along his jaw. The sharp tip dug into his flesh, his chin tilting up. Pure adrenaline shot through your veins. The feeling of power exhilarating.
He held your gaze, looking down his nose. This was how you knew him. High and mighty. Looking down at anyone he deemed beneath him--and that was basically everyone except his closest circle...
And you, a long ago.
But right now, while he looked at you, you saw only a tiny man.
Right at your mercy.
The giggle leaving your lips was nothing short of unhinged. Your hand dropped to his throat, fiddling with the dainty Gucci chain around it. It was such a fine piece of jewelry.
Made for him, actually. You had it custom made for him, after all.
Something raw clawed at your throat. Sudden and overwhelming. Your fingers trembled just the tiniest bit. No one would've noticed. No one should've noticed.
But he had.
Of course, he fucking had.
And the air shifted.
Panic, rage, or something far more dangerous to show... You didn't know. Didn't want to know.
His warm breath fanned across your neck. A strand of his hair tickled your nose, heat crawling up your face as his voice reached your ears. "You're right, darling."
Your breath hitched as he pulled away just enough to look you in the eyes. Ice filled your veins, burning as if his hand had closed around your throat, memories forced their way through all your defenses.
Hot, cold, feverish memories.
The smirk dropped from his lips, a wry smile in its place. "So, you better start running like hell," he said. "Because, I do come for everyone," he stepped back, "Even you."
The audacity.
Heat replaced the ice. No time to recover as feelings muddled together, uglier, nastier, yet making you feel more alive than you'd had in years.
You chuckled, sharp, eyes blazing. "You still think you're the devil, don't you, Hajime?"
The flush of red creeping up his neck made you grin. He tried to shake it off, but his smirk looked much more strained than before. "Am I not?"
Shaking your head, you stepped forward. There, chest pressed to his, the beating of your hearts synchronizing, all else faded away.
For a second, your eyes dropped to his lips before glancing back up. You swallowed, throat dry. "No, you're not," you whispered, a small smile weighed down by years of anger and grief and heartbreak on your lips.
Your finger hooked around the chain, a slow breath leaving your lips, hands steadying as you snapped it clean off his neck. The chain slid from your grasp and onto the floor without a sound. It glittered where the light caught the tiny Gucci logo.
He froze as you stepped closer once more, eyes narrowing. Reaching your arms around him, the cuffs snapped closed around his wrists. He hissed at the deliberate tightness of cold metal pinching his skin, jolting back as he pulled at the cuffs in disbelief.
You took a step back, looked at him, ignoring the sting in your heart as you waved a hand towards the agents. He struggled against the agents grabbing him, cursing under his breath, but stopped the second your voice broke through the panicked calculations running in his mind.
Your finger traced the chain around your own neck, feeling the coolness of the logo against your skin. You smiled. "The devil wears Prada, after all."
