Plant of the Day
Thursday 30 April 2026
A dramatic bulb for a spring display, Fritillaria imperialis 'Rubra Maxima' (crown imperial) grows well in most fertile, well-drained soils. It is an imbricated bulb (made up of scales) and so can be fragile and should be planted at four times the bulb’s depth, this helps to support the flower stem. The umbels of nodding, orange-red flowers have large stores of nectar in droplets.
