luke looks to her, trying to ignore the fluttering in his chest and the nerves that are starting to creep up. hand goes to rub at the back of his neck, as he lets out a small breath. “it - it is, yeah i ...” it feels weird, for him to be at loss of what to say, words usually come so naturally to him. “what - what is it, exactly? like ... what’s going on between us, zo? what does this mean?” things felt weird, different, but not in a bad way.

“i’m working on it, love.” luke says softly, curling himself into her. he has her pulled onto his lap, head resting in the crook of her neck, able to press kisses to her cheek if he turns his face just the right way. “and i’m so glad i have you by my side while doing it. i wouldn’t want to be doing any of this without you, always need my own little personal cheerleader.” he nuzzles her cheek now, feeling extremely content in this moment, soft smile on his face.

“i know zo, i know. but hey, we’ll be back before you know it and then we’ll be right back to torturing each other.” the words come out in a tease, knowing zoey can probably hear their smile through the phone. but despite how light and teasing she’s being, there’s a part of alex that can’t help but worry. leaving zoey alone with their parents is something he never wants to do, but sadly they hadn’t had much of a choice. “but uh seriously, how’s it going over there? you doing okay?”

luke doesn’t even hesitate, scooting across the couch towards her and instantly gathering her up into his arms. “of course, love, of course. i got you.” he says softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. his thumb begins rubbing back and forth gently on her shoulder, in a soothing motion. “do - you want to talk, or i could just talk and you listen? or i can even sing? or - we can just sit here in the quiet, that’s okay too.”
