Crazy Claws' Wisconsin Dells Diary: Distraction #2
So it's Memorial Day weekend, of all weekends, the weekend many see as the launch of the summer season in Wisconsin Dells, as well as many other tourist traps of the highest order.
But then again, not so fast: It may be the start of summer, and Monday may be the holiday for remembering the fallen of all wars--and I understand the Dells has quite the parade on the day to Spring Grove Cemetery to remember its fallen. Which, as it happens, includes the infamous Confederate Civil War spy Belle Boyd, who died in the Dells before she could deliver an address to the local GAR post about her war exploits. Died, it turns out, broke and in direst circumstances; hence, her burial in such an unlikely a place for even Scooby-Doo's crew to investigate (and yes, Velma is likely to know the whole sordid tale, if you ask her).
But remember, kiddos, you still probably have a few more days of school to get through after the weekend before you can finally chuck your books and try prodding your parents into insanity about going to the Dells in the first place (unless it's an Unwritten and Antient Family Tradition to get to the Dells every summer, having the same lousy summer quarters you commute to from Chicago every Friday evening and back late Sunday nights just to avoid the tollway traffic).

So grill up the mettwurst, I say, even if the sign at the resort's convenience store proclaims "We don't know where Mom is but we have Pop on ice", and you probably yearn for the days of the Table Talk Cheese Shop downtown, which was a rather "cheesy" spot to begin with back in the day. Carr Valley may have a cheese shop here, not to mention Market Square Cheese in that pseudo-Swiss chalet by the freeway and the outlet mall in Lake Delton--but what Wisconsin Dells could use is a rather plebian cheese-and-sausage shop proffering Wisconsin's Finest in ways as would give Top Cat and his crew, for all their Sargeant Bilkoesque scams, insomnia.
Have you tried a hot cuppa Horlick's (another fine old Wisconsin creation, out of Racine, I understand) before bedtime, TC?

Memo to Loopy DeLoop: Rather difficult to find decent Quebecoise-style poutine in the Dells. Yet. Even if the cheese curds, an essential in that Quebecoise comfort food staple, can be had at your local supermarket. Closest I am aware of: The Chili Cheese Fries at Culver's.
