What types of grades, steel and properties comes in SAE 1018 Chemical Composition
SAE 1018 is an alloy of low carbon steel. It is composed of carbon, iron, manganese and other elements like sulphur and phosphorus. It has good tensile and yield strength hence it is generally installed in structural applications. It has good ductility making it easily bendable. It can also be formed in preferred shapes.
Along with its strength and ductility, it is also weldable. The thicker versions can also be welded by performing pre heating on the material. It generally has low hardness on surface level but it can be increased in performing heat treatments like normalising, quenching and tempering, annealing, etc.
There are different grades of SAE material used for conditions with different demands.
It is composed of low amount of carbon steel , approximately 0.18% of it is carbon and the rest is other elements.
Because of the low carbon content, it is very ductile and also weldable, mostly preferred in conditions requiring moderate level of strength.
It has a higher degree of carbon in it up to 0.20%.
Hence it has increased level of strength as compared to 1080.
Used in gears requiring higher amount of strength.
Moderate level of carbon content, approximately 0.45%.
It has higher level of hardness and strength than the previous versions and this helps it in high pressure situations. It can be heat treated for better and enhanced qualities like increased strength, durability and tolerance.
Even though it has low carbon content, it has high level of manganese in its composition.
This higher level of manganese provides its molecular structure with enhanced hardness and strength.
Hence it is used in conditions which require high wear and tear resistance.
This grade is given to alloy steel with good level of chromium and molybdenum in its composure. It has good level of hardness and strength, ideally used in high stress and high pressure applications in automotive and aerospace industries.
While SAE 1018 does not have types, it can be modified to be applicable in demanding conditions by giving it heat treatments or through different means of modification.
Following are some modifications and treatments given to SAE 1018 for enhancements:
This material is obtained through process of drawing the material through a die.
This helps in enhancing its mechanical properties and also gives a better surface finish.
It provides the material with increased tensile strength and higher level of tolerance.
This is made from rolling the steel at high temperature, this helps it get enhanced ductility and makes it more shapable.
It has low strength and rough surface comparatively but it is more ductile and weldable.
Hence it is used in zones where surface finish is less valued.
SAE 1018 with Higher content of Manganese:
This material is obtained by increasing the manganese content of the steel from 0.70% to 1.00%. it gives the material enhanced hardness, toughness and tolerance.
Commonly used in places where wear and tear resistance is needed.
