Tom and Zendaya had no problem being flirty and playful with each other BECAUSE they were not a couple. The pr strategy back then was just to use their friendship and play the “are they..?- aren't they..?”. Their public interactions will probably be different now because it's lot easier to be yourself and at ease with a co-star when you don't have to pretend to be in love with them.
Also, lilothee didn't have any chemistry together not because they didn't like each other but because they were a pr couple. Tim acted awkward around her because he's not comfortable lying and pretending. Had they not been “together”, they would've been normal friendly costars like him and Lyna were in interviews for exemple.

Don’t you think that if he cared enough about her to be her friend that he would’ve made a better effort to make their romance seem more believable, for both their sakes? He is an actor, after all. And an excellent one, too. LRD also made very little effort in carrying on their charade, so the feeling was mutual. Had they liked each other in the first place, we wouldn’t even be talking about this. They seem to me like two magnets turned the wrong way around. They were a PR failure right from the start.
