Hi! I've heard repeatedly that out of all the actors who play Emma's love interest, MRJ was the only one who didn't have a screentest with Jen while both Colin and Jamie (perhaps also Eion?) did. I wasn't around in the fandom during S1-S2, so I don't know if this 'common knowledge' among the fandom is based on solid source. Is it true or just a rumor?

I believe most of that is rumor. I’ve never seen a source cited to any of it. However, if anyone has an actual link to credible proof please feel free to pass it on.

However, I should also say I’ve only heard the rumors about Colin having one and MRJ not, I’m not familiar with any mention of Jamie or Eion.

I definitely believe MRJ didn’t. There would be no need and remember, during shooting JMo has a hectic shooting schedule in Vancouver while the casting process takes place in LA. So it would have to be a very big deal to fly an actor to Van to test with her.

It seems plausible that the casting of the iconic Captain Hook as her love interest would warrant it, but I think if it really happened we would have heard much more about it by now, in detail. They’ve both done enough panels, interviews and meet and greets. Besides JMo has said she knew the chemistry would work on the first day of shooting. Also it sort of sounds like everyone fell in love with Colin during the audition process and they wanted him, so I could actually see them saying ‘we’re going with this guy’ and crossing their fingers and hoping for the best. And A&E have confirmed numerous times that Colin was made a regular as soon as those dailies started coming back from those first few eps and they saw it was all working splendidly.

Personally in a list of who JMo has the most onscreen chemistry with from the scene partners you mentioned, I think it goes:

1) Colin (#1 by a Simone Biles style margin)2) Eion3) MRJ4) Jamie

I honestly saw no chemistry between Emma and Graham and was quite disappointed by that fact when watching the first few eps of season 1.

All-in-all it’s interesting show lore, but I don’t really see how it’s relevant. I know it’s been used by CSers as a defense against anti attacks that CS is fan service and was never planned, but that has been shot down many times by A&E and frankly those charges are just nonsense from disappointed shippers.

Not that I think there is anything wrong with ships that weren’t “planned.” Lots of times it’s better when chemistry strikes unexpectedly (Olicity for example.) My first OTP was unplanned chemistry that ended up completely derailing the “planned” will-they-won’t-they romance. (That would be the unexpected chemistry between Donna and Josh on The West Wing completely derailing Josh/Mandy resulting in Mandy disappearing after the first season.)

Actually I think most shippers who defend CS against charges of not being planned do so, not because it’s a bad thing, but because it’s demonstrably not true. Frankly, I think we’re all lucky that a planned romantic pairing is as shippable as CS is. We get the best of both worlds, the lightning-strike style chemistry AND the meticulous planning and long term story-telling of a well thought-out romance.
