Marlene has a few nicknames. Marls, Marmalade (from James being stupid), occasionally Lene. But there was a brief period of time she had about a dozen.
When Marlene dyed her hair red, James of course immediately took to calling her "Red". That wouldn't work, though, because Lily was already Red.
To rectify the issue, the entire Marauders friend group started using shades of red. Over the next couple of weeks, Marlene got to experience being: Crimson, Scarlet, Coral, Ruby, Vermillion, Maroon, Mars, Strawberry, Berry, and finally Cherry.
Cherry stuck. And thus was born her Marauders name.
