“And then I kicked the guy through the window of the store and right in front of the police, it was super cool!” Jason had barely taken a breath through the story he told Dick of the time he handled a case basically by himself on patrol a few nights before.
Dick didn’t want to be in the cave, that much was clear from how much he bristled every time Bruce looked his way or cleared his throat. Jason didn’t care though, this was Dick Grayson of the Flying Graysons, the first Robin. All it had taken was one look at Dick in his costume, v dropping low down his chest, for Jason to know that it was love at first sight.
The only problem was that no matter how hard Jason tried, he couldn’t get Dick to give him the time of day. All Dick did was yell at Bruce. Jason wanted Dick to smile, he wanted Dick to look his way for one second. He knew Dick was livid that Jason had replaced him, but Jason was more than that.
“The other day, I bench pressed 100 pounds,” Jason said as he dropped down into a split. “B said it was a new personal record, right B?”
“Jason don’t you have homework you should be doing?” Dick asked.
“I already finished it,” Jason said. “I’m ahead actually. I do a lot of my homework in study hall, then the rest when I get home. It gives me more time for training.”
“A shower then?” Dick asked.
Jason knew when he was being dismissed. He sighed and walked to the locker room, doing his best not to let his shoulders fall until the door was shut behind him.
-
“Bruce, when I said I could help you with this case, I didn’t mean watching over Robin for you.”
“I can look after myself,” Jason piped up, trying to quell the argument so patrol with Dick wouldn’t be as tense. “I lived on my own for months after my mom died, and then again when my first foster family was bad.”
The look Dick gave him wasn’t admiration like Jason wanted, but pity. Jason hated when people pitied him.
“Come on, Dick! It’ll be fun! I can show you my favorite chili dog spot. I did some research and it’s on our route for tonight. Lighten up.”
Dick sighed and turned back to Bruce. “You owe me for this, B. Come on Little Wing, let’s go.”
Jason put on his helmet and slotted behind Dick on his motorcycle, arms wrapped around Dick’s waist, warmth travelling through him in every spot where he and Dick were touching. He closed his eyes on the ride out of the cave and pretended that he could have this moment over and over again. He would. He escaped Crime Alley, he was doing better in school than anyone thought he would, and he was Robin, the Robin.
Dick had them run through a series of warm-ups where they ran from rooftop to rooftop. Jason managed to keep up with Dick the entire time. When they got their first call, Jason helped Dick take down a few thugs trying to rob a convenience store and calmed down the lady that was crying behind the counter.
“That was really sweet of you, Little Wing,” Dick said as they left the store, climbing up to another rooftop.
“She was upset,” Jason said with a shrug, even though his cheeks were warm and pink. He knew his green mask would only make his blush even more furious. “It was the right thing to do.”
“It was,” Dick agreed.
They handled a few more incidents together, and each time, Dick warmed up to him more and more. Jason tried less to impress him and more to do the right thing, trying to be the best Robin he could be. Each time Dick gave him a gentle shove and told him “good job” Jason felt like he was lighting up from the inside.
“So about that chili dog place you were telling me about,” Dick said. “Is there any chance they’re open right now?”
“Absolutely!” Jason said.
“Lead the way then.”
A few chili dogs later, Dick leaned back on a rooftop, legs kicking over the edge. “You were right about those chili dogs, Little Wing, I’m going to have to stop by there every time I’m in Gotham now. I don’t know how he did it but they were,” Dick did a chef’s kiss gesture. “Hot diggity delicious.”
Jason laughed. “Hot diggity delicious?”
Dick shrugged but he had a lopsided grin on his face. “Not every bit of wordplay lands, I guess.” He stood up and stretched his arms above his head. Jason’s eyes didn’t know where to look. “I think it’s about time we dropped you off.”
The ride back to the manor felt far too short, and if Jason held onto Dick longer than he should have after they pulled into the cave, Dick didn’t say anything.
Jason took off his helmet and lingered in front of Dick. “Thanks for tonight,” he said. “I know you didn’t want to go on patrol with me but I think it was a lot of fun. We should do it again!”
Dick looked at him for a long moment. “We should,” he said. “I had fun. I’m sorry I made it seem like I didn’t want to spend time with you. You know how B and I are.” He reached behind his head. “Anyways. You have a good night, Jason.”
Jason stepped forwards and pulled Dick into a hug before Dick could leave. “Thank you,” Jason said again.
Dick pulled back. “You’re welcome, Little Wing. Maybe I’ll come around later this week and we can spar. How does that sound?”
Jason lit up. “That sounds awesome!” He said. “I bet I can pin you.”
“I’m sure you can,” Dick said as he leaned in and pecked Jason’s cheek goodnight. “Night Jason.”
He put on his helmet and took off out of the cave, and Jason stood there with red cheeks and a grin on his face until Alfred called to ask him when he was planning on coming upstairs.
I think this will be cliche but oh well its fun! 🤣 40, 59 and 69! x)
40. Almost Kiss
59. Interrupted Declaration of Love
69. Flirting Under Fire
Okay so all of these actually work pretty well together. I feel like Jason and Dick are used to bantering during cases together, it was a natural part of being Robin, so of course it’s something that sticks with them as they get older too. If anyone here has ever engaged with in playful banter with someone, you probably know that it can turn into flirty.
Comments like: “And that is why the Red Hood is known for his aim” and “Wow Nightwing, I didn’t think you could be any more dramatic with that flip.”
Turn into: (awkward transition into fic)
“Wow,” Jason says as he goes over to the thug that’s knocked out cold on the ground. Six foot five doesn’t look so big curled up on concrete. “I never knew someone could kick that high without dislocating their leg.”
“That’s not even the best I can do,” Dick says, preening like a peacock. Jason has to admit, it’s a good look on him.
“Oh really?”
“I’ll have to show you sometime.”
And this kind of stuff continues between them, they keep working together because not only are they a great team, but it’s fun. They go back and forth, eat food late at night on top of buildings, and crash at each other’s places when they get too tired.
One time Jason’s at Dick’s place and mentions this movie he sees on Dick’s shelf and they watch it, and next thing you know, they start getting together to watch movies, and talk about books, and enjoy each other’s company.
Both of them separately realize they like one another, but of course they think it’s one sided or that it’s a bad idea.
One time they’re on top of a building, leaning up against each other because it’s cold and tired.
“It’s so beautiful up here,” Dick is talking about the Gotham skyline, but all Jason can focus on is the way the wind flutters Dick’s hair around. If Jason were to reach up and touch it, would it feel as feather soft as it looks?
“Yeah,” he whispers. Dick turns to look at him and they don’t even need to speak. There’s fire between them, burning so hot Jason could be in the Arctic without clothing and he’d be sweating.
The distance between them shrinks, little by little until Jason can’t focus on Dick’s face anymore and it all turns into a blue, tan, and black blur.
“Nightwing, Hood, we need you in precinct twelve.”
At that point Jason and Dick pull away from each other and they just kind of...don’t talk about what happened. Both of them wonder if they imagined what happened or if the other was really interested. Did they almost kiss? Jason and Dick are both overthinkers so they both analyze it to the point where they drift apart a bit. They don’t want to confront what happened. They had such a great dynamic, they’re not going to ruin it for some almost kiss.
Well, they find it kind of hard to not be around each other. One night Dick is in his apartment taking a night off and Jason shows up at his door with takeout from one of Dick’s favorite places and they settle into the couch to watch a movie.
Neither of them can focus though, not when the other is so close. All they can focus on is every single action the other makes; they’re constantly glancing over at each other and trying to pretend it didn’t happen.
It’s tension town, so of course they have to break it, but of course they both speak at the same time. They do this like three times before one of them confesses feelings for the other, and then it reciprocates and boom, that’s how Jason and Dick ended up together and never finished that movie they were watching.
I assume that you love Jason Todd and you'll always agree with him when he's fighting Bruce x)
I do love Jason Todd, and while I agree with him a lot of the time when he’s fighting with Bruce, I don’t ALWAYS agree with him when he’s fighting with Bruce.
I saw a really great picture of Jason Todd on my dash, started watching Young Justice, looked up the tag for either Dick or Jason, and then I saw a shippy pic of them and fell in love. I looked up a fanfic and next thing I knew I was in deep.
