Reasons Freddie Trumper is a trans man (because I, a transmasc, say so)

- Trans Freddie who started passing when he was a young teenager (his parents never came to his chess tournaments, so they didn’t find out) and got on hormones 10 years prior to the start of the show (late 1960s were when hormone treatment was first offered in the US, and he would have had enough money from winning chess competitions) is -just- plausible enough within the timeline

- He fucks but only in a psychosexually complicated way

- Conflicted between his mommy dom or his bisexual situationship who he hates

- Devoted himself to a hobby very young to distract from his internal distress

- “Knows that he’ll never fit the system others expect him to”

- His parents don’t talk to him anymore because they don’t like the man he’s become

- “I never called, a crazy thing to do - just in case she said ‘who?’” (NAME CHANGE IMPLICATIONS)

- A performance of over-the-top swagger that he actually really enjoys (“I fucking love it”) but that also covers up a deep insecurity (“I’m in the spotlight, half of the world my judge”)

- Basically all of Pity The Child

- Hiding his true self from his parents and the despair of knowing they’ll never know him

- “I was only HER SON”

- we haven’t even talked about “I didn’t miss him, he made it perfectly clear/ I was a fool, and probably queer” (which makes even MORE sense as a judgement on little tomboy Freddie)

it was so funny watching ragtime on Thursday, a show that is so genuinely politically relevant, and then watching this version of chess which just shoehorns in the most laughably hamfisted political references at any opportunity. There’s literally a bit where Bryce Pinkham is like “ah yes, this this just like RFK Junior and his brainworm”
