Marissa and Dani were married in 1301, a match approved of in their society because Dani is very male-presenting. They adopted their son Archer in 1303, but Dani gave birth in 1305 to Oyuun. None of the other families in Chestnut Ridge have really questioned how exactly that happened. As a family they have a made a name for themselves selling fermented mare's milk to outsiders.

Marissa Tracey, 35

Wealth and status have always been very important to Marissa, something she's never been shy about admitting. She chose Dani as her partner because they were already starting to brew drinks at that point and Marissa saw the potential. She's the one who handles the sales, the haggling, and in general manages the contacts needed for their business and she's never been happier.

Dani Davila, 32

Dani never felt like a woman or girl and thankfully had a family that did not care how they presented so long as they contributed to the family. In their society Dani is generally treated like a man with all the expectations and freedoms that come with the role - even after carrying a child.

Archer Davila, 14

Though he was adopted Archer has no memories of his birth family, all he's known is Marissa and Dani, and life has been good to him so far. He has a special interest in the history of their people and often speaks of the past and how things might change in the future.

Oyuun Davila, 5

Little Oyuun is a firecracker who has never known fear. She loves riding fast across the plains, loves climbing all over her older brother... life is pretty great for her.

The Khan household, leaders of Chestnut Ridge, is led by Umber now that Don Gooseman has passed. He never expected to take on such a role but is determined to do his very best by his people as well as his family. He is quite happy to have the children he does, even if he secretly wanted a whole herd of them, and he very much adores his wife Juniper even if she's a bit odd. Wren losing his first wife so suddenly was a blow, but he's recently taken Freya to wife and Umber believes the girl is very suited to nomadic life.

Umber Grove, 50

Umber has always told anyone who will listen that he fell in love with Juniper at first sight. He still remembers the braids in her hair coming slightly undone, the way she smiled at him - it's a moment lovingly preserved in his mind. Together they've had a fairly happy, easy go of things. Even their arguments seem few and far between, and usually small.

Juniper Grove, 43

In another life Juniper would be able to dedicate herself to botany, to studying and growing plants. Unfortunately she was born in a nomadic society with no use for the growing of crops. She still has an interest in nature, often going on long walks and scribbling pictures in the dirt of the things she's seen.

Wren Grove, 22

A lifelong romantic Wren has been wooing ladies since he was old enough to have such interests; had it not been for his watchful parents he might have had a few babies born on the other side of the blankets. Sadly his first wife did not survive the birth of their son, Berke, but with love being such a huge part of his wants and needs Wren was quickly married to a Nordhaven girl, Freya.

Freya Loden, 16

Beautiful and athletic Freya had her pick of suitors, but something about the Khan of Chestnut Ridge's son appealed to her in a way few others did - probably because their way of life was physically demanding and she would be expected to keep up with the toughest of them.

Itzi Grove, 9

Itzi is rather unserious by nature, which would be difficult if he wasn't so well-liked by his peers. Even adults can't bear to scold him because he's just so sweet. Still Itzi does his best to do his duties and to make his parents proud.

Berke Grove, 1

A third-generation Khan in the making, Berke was born screaming and never really learned to stop. His grandmother has been caring for him, nursing him using mare's milk, but now he's Freya's problem.
