If I Don't See You Later
Synopsis: Newt decides to see how flustered he can make Chip [FLUFF!!] TW: none :)
Chipper Wells and Newt were always doing cutesy stuff around the glade. Whenever they had time together, in between odd jobs and Newt’s keeper meetings, they were constantly chuckling together, pulling pranks and teasing the greenies. They often sat together when they could, by the bonfire or in the cabins, whispering nonsense between themselves.
One night, Newt decided to do something completely out of the ordinary. He knew there wasn’t any reason to do it beside for jokes sake, but that was what made it even more special. In the dying light of the fire, he contemplated his plan: to make Chip squirm in embarrassment in front of everyone. And when he saw his moment, he took it.
“Chipper Wells!” he announced, catching the attention of not only Chip, but the other Gladers nearby. When they all turned to look, he was down on one knee, holding aloft a ripe apple in one hand.
“Newt, what is this?” Chip asked in a murmur, already embarrassed and not wanting to make a scene.
Newt grinned. His plan was working.
“Chipper Wells,” Newt announced again, “I would like nothing more….” He paused for effect. “Than for you to take this apple as a symbol of my love for you.”
Some Gladers were shocked that Newt was so game; others, older and therefore more experienced in Chewt shenanigans, simply rolled their eyes and went back to work. A fiery red crawled up Chip’s cheeks and across the bridge of his nose. Those still watching the proceedings had started a chant of ‘APPLE! APPLE! APPLE!’, complete with clapping hands and stomping feet. Some even started cheering. Newt stared up at his friend-boy with a simple, gazing intensity. The apple shook in his hands, his knee starting to give out. It was his bad knee, after all. If Chip didn’t say anything soon, he would collapse. Still Chip remained frozen in place, embarrassed out of his mind.
Just before Newt fell, he moved. He grabbed the apple and Newt’s arm, pulling him to his feet and into a messy hug. “Love accepted,” he stuttered into Newt’s shoulder, covering his face with his hands.
When they pulled apart, the Gladers cheered like crazy. Drinks were thrown into the air. Chip pulled Newt to the back of the crowd, out of public eyesight. “What the heck was that?” he demanded, but there was no real heat behind it.
“A profession of my undying devotion,” Newt hooted, once again lighting up the nearby merry makers.
Chipper was chagrined beyond belief. The red cloud of blush had covered his entire face and ears and even spread down his neck. He sat with his head in his hands, occasionally glancing up in the direction of the hammocks, hoping for an escape. He sat like that for quite a while, as the others didn’t let up with their jolly taunting. Some of the Gladers rushed over to jostle Newt around with grins on their faces, cheering to his daring, further putting poor Chip on the spot.
Finally, Chip noticed that some of the other guys were heading back to the cabins, to bed. He took it as his chance to do the same and escape any further humiliation that would surely ensue if he stayed. But Newt had also seen the early-leavers and was concocting a final plan. One last attempt to make Chip the shyest he’d ever been. He clasped his friend-boy’s wrist as he made a desperate attempt to flee the bonfire and, pulling him down to his sitting height, muttered his final attack loud enough for a few people to hear.
“If I don’t see you later: love you lots Chipmunk.”
