i know no one cares about CHGTJ anymore (including me) but i came up with a devious plot connection thingy that just makes everything so much more tragic help meeee

MAJOR CHGTJ DEVELOPMENT

i finally figured out what hikaru should do

she used to be a primary school english teacher but retired early to focus on her real passions: oil painting and pottery

she's mostly an abstract and impressionist painter. she also runs a small flower shop but it's only really there as a source of income and as a place to display her art

from the start, i knew i wanted hikaru to have a job/hobby that wasn't directly competitive like racing. something you can improve at, but you can't necessarily become the objective BEST at. abstract art is also commonly dismissed as "not real art" but hikaru doesn't care! all that matters to her is that she enjoys the very act of making art itself

and that's the big lesson that chick needs to learn. he stopped enjoying racing a longggg time ago. he let competition and the need for validation and superiority consume him and destroy him

during the finale of CHGTJ, chick and hikaru complete a painting together and weirdly enough, it's his shaky brush strokes next to her steady ones that makes chick realize that

a bit dark but if any writers here need a car-specific suicide method:

ingesting sodium silicate

according to wikipedia, if a car runs its engine on half a gallon of sodium silicate instead of oil, the car's engine gets damaged catastrophically within a few minutes

im not smart about cars so idk if that could actually "kill" a car but its an interesting thing to think about

so after going through the list of amtrak routes that would've been operating before 1986, picking the only route that includes nebraska and ends at california, cross-referencing the route's stations with a historical population density map of nebraska, i conclude that chick & bruiser would've boarded the california zephyr at the station in hastings (which is 156 miles away from their hometown)

and Chick Hicks Goes to Japan is all about chick becoming self-actualized and freeing himself from (self) destructive cycles

it's also super Deep cuz it visually represents how deeply intertwined chick's identity and personhood is with being a racer
