04/10/12  Some of our eldest o.g. players return this Tuesday.  Ian Springer is the first gentleman to have hit a drum kit in our little sound box, and, alongside pianist Rob Clearfield, has clocked more hours in the house than any other.  Ian and Rob have some intriguing modifications for us this time around - their usual bass compadre, Charlie Kirchen, will be subbed out of necessity for Jake Vinsel (who we've heard quite a bit from lately); and an antique 5-octave train car piano will be replacing Rob's standard synthesized organ.  Such circumstances are bound to bring the best out of everyone involved, it'll be exciting to hear different shades of all three players. 

TRIO in CURIO is a free, weekly jazz engagement at Curio, sous-sol beneath Gilt Bar (230 W Kinzie St Chicago Illinois 60654).  Vinyl selections by Joe Darling commence around 830 pm, band usually starts around 930 pm.

03/27/12  The Nick Mazzarella Trio will be performing this Tuesday night at Curio, in the final round of MARCH SAXNESS.

The spiritual jazz lineage planted in the mid 1960s by saxophonist Albert Ayler has resurfaced in Chicago's Nick Mazzarella, who pushes a similar amount of soul power through his horn.  Dissimilarly, Mazzarella juxatposes his firey explorations with a more delicate and communicable rhythm section -- Anton Hatwich (bass) and Frank Rosaly (drums) play with clearer expression and more purposeful dynamics than the freer ancient works of Ayler's Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray, making the music of Aviary more accessible, and in turn more relevant to the modern conversation.
