The Chicago Architecture Center was such an interesting place to visit. I had not heard about them until this trip to Chicago. This two story center contains the worlds largest 3D printed model. This Chicago model is updated every 6 months to keep up with the new buildings around the city. There is a short film that accompanies the model that goes over the history of Chicago architecture. During the film different areas of the model lights up so you can see which part they are talking about. The second floor contains models of buildings from all around the world. They even have a model of the new building in Saudi Arabia that will be the tallest building in the world once its complete. The architecture center also offers walking tours of the city as well architecture boat tours. St. Ignatius College Prep by Brule Laker Housed in a rare example of a pre-Chicago Fire structure, St. Ignatius College Prep at 1076 W. Roosevelt Rd. celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. Since its founding in 1869 by Arnold Damen, S.J., the five-story brick edifice with its carved wooden doors and lion heads has welcomed generations of young men and, since 1979, young women. Among the unique spaces is the 1887-1888 Brunswick Room featuring elaborate cabinets and woodwork installed by the Brunswick Company for the school’s natural history museum, the Foglia Library, the “Chicago gallery” of architectural artifacts in the Driehaus building, and Father Damen’s office. On my agenda today: visit the Arts Institute in the morning and the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) in the afternoon. 

Since the Arts Institute opens at 10.30am, I could sleep a little longer. 

I had 2 hours to walk around before I had to move on to the CAC. It’s impossible to see everything in such a short amount of time, so I chose to only visit the modern/ contemporary exhibitions and the “small rooms” exhibition. 

It was manageable. I liked it a lot, especially the small rooms were fun to see. They looked like little fancy Polly Pocket houses!

After lunch I joined a 1,5h walking tour organized by the Architecture Center; “Chicago Architecture: a walk through time”. Our guide gave basic information (dates, names of the architect, etc.) as well as some stories and anecdotes. It was very interesting.

After the walking tour I visited the Chicago Architecture Center. On the lower level they display a small model of a part of the city. On the tablets next to it you can look up certain buildings, areas, ... and make them lit up on the model.

For dinner I went to Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria to try their deep pan pizza. I have to admit, I like it more than the one at Uno. Word has it, the founder Lou Malnati invented the deep pan pizza when he was working for Uno and sold them the recipe before he started his own restaurant. Lou Malnati’s has its own special buttercrust which gives a different taste than the normal crust at Uno’s.
