So much of Chick’s trip was spent taking little hikes and seeing the different scenery of the high desert or around Lake Tahoe. Now she just needs to figure out how to hike and walk more at home, in the beautiful yet humid North Carolina Piedmont.

Chick has been going through her pictures from a trip she took back in August. Apparently they did a lot of hiking. #chickoutwest #chickonvacation #adventuresofchick (at Mnt Rose Tahoe Rim Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVVVAoRAZVe/?utm_medium=tumblr
Bandelier National Monument, Part II
In the first photo, you can see how holey the rock is. Chick is standing in the ruins of the village of Tyuonyi (QU-weh-nee). The village and nearby dwellings were at their height in the late 1400s.
We crawled up a ladder into some of the rock caves that ancestral pueblo people had carved out.
Chick loved Bandelier!
Bandelier National Monument, Part I
Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico is located in the Frijoles Canyon. (The national park is named for an amateur anthropologist, Adolph Bandelier, who visited it in 1880.) The mountains were created from compressed volcanic ash. Because of this initial material, the rock is fairly friable.
Ancestral Pueblo people saw natural holes in the stone and enlarged them, creating caves for living and food storage. The ancestral Pueblo people built dwellings alongside the caves.
While in New Mexico, Chick visited the ruins of the village of Tyuonyi (QU-weh-nee) and the adjacent cave dwellings. She enjoyed finding small places in the rock and pretending they were her cave dwellings.
In the quest to find places where Georgia O'Keeffe painted and Ansel Adams photographed, Chick made a visit to Ghost Ranch in NM. There, she took a tour on horseback! The views were fantastic!
The little green chick had a delightful time this morning looking at the miniatures Alexander Girard collected and donated to the Museum of International Folk Art. She could almost smell the foods cooking in this Mexican kitchen.
The little green chick tried to get some photographs at Taos Pueblo yesterday. My hand is a poor substitute for a proper tripod.
