A quote from 2002
On 26 November, 2001, Terry King, a 40-year-old resident of Cantonment, Florida, was brutally bludgeoned to death by his own sons, 13-year-old Derek and 12-year-old Alex King. Using an aluminum baseball bat, the boys attacked their father as he slept, later setting the family home on fire in an attempt to cover up the crime.
After the murder, the boys sought refuge with family friend, Ricky Chavis, who hid them in his trailer and allegedly washed their bloodstained clothes. The case became further entangled when Alex accused Chavis of sexual abuse, a charge for which Chavis was later acquitted. The boys’ motivations for the murder fluctuated, ranging from claims of mental abuse and harsh discipline by their father to allegations that Chavis orchestrated the crime and manipulated them.
The trial was highly unconventional, with prosecutors pursuing charges against both Chavis and the brothers for the same crime. Chavis was acquitted, and although the brothers were initially convicted of second-degree murder, the verdict was overturned due to due process concerns. In 2002, both pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, receiving sentences of seven and eight years.
The case garnered extensive media attention, inspiring debates over the justice system and the culpability of the young defendants. Derek was released in 2009, and Alex in 2008. Their lives took divergent paths: Alex was arrested in 2011 for a parole violation and tragically died of a drug overdose in Montana in April 2024, at the age of 35.
Killer mom Susan Smith has been denied parole by a unanimous vote after she sobbed and begged to be let out of prison on Wednesday.
The seven member South Carolina Board of Paroles immediately voted to deny Smith’s request. However, she will now be able to apply for parole every two years — meaning the family of her murdered sons, Alex and Michael, will have to show up to fight her request if they want to ensure she stays behind bars.
Smith has faced disciplinary action several times in prison, including two separate sexual encounters with corrections officers, incidents of self-harm, possession of marijuana — and most recently for giving contact information for family and her ex-husband to a documentary producer.
The World's Most Evil Mother?
Theresa Knorr murdered two of her children after inflicting unimaginable torture.
Theresa Knorr murdered two of her children in a jealous rage after inflicting unimaginable torture.
Born in 1946, Theresa was only a teenager herself when she began bringing children into the world. Between 1963 and 1970, she gave birth to six children in total — three girls and three boys — to two different fathers.
In order of arrival, first came Howard in 1963, then Sheila in 1965, Suesan in 1966, William in 1967, Robert in 1968 and lastly Terry in 1971.
Despite being married a total of four times, Theresa’s relationships with men did not tend to last long and consequentially her children did not have a consistent father figure in their lives. A succession of failed marriages and short-lived flings meant that Theresa mostly raised her children as a single mother in their Sacramento, California home.
Although Theresa got along fairly amicably with her sons, she loathed her daughters. After her fourth divorce, Theresa’s mental health began to deteriorate and she irrationally blamed the teenage girls for her ageing and weight gain, which triggered her to become increasingly physically and psychologically abusive. Theresa eventually recruited her grown sons to assist her with carrying out acts of unthinkable violence towards the young girls — with fatal consequences.
