Speaking out: the film that gave Russia’s LGBT teenagers a voice

These directors took on homophobia and let Russia’s LGBT teens tell the world about their lives

Persecution of the founder of suicide prevention organization for LGBT youth in Russia.

Russian journalist Elena Klimova, the founder of Children-404 project, can go to the court again. 

Children 404 is a website that provides a “safe space for teenagers to share their stories, get support and obtain advice from experienced psychologists.” It helps LGBT youth to deal with discrimination, violence and psychological attacks and is credited with preventing suicides, preventing teens from running away from hope and helping to ease feelings of isolation.

On January 17 Klimova received a call from police asking her to come by for a chat. There she was told that they had received several complaints about the site from St
Petersburg’s Duma (parliament) member Vitaliy Milonov. She was told to shut down the site and related social networks and pay a fine for “propaganda”. After explaining the purpose of the site, the investigator agreed that there were no grounds for criminal charges. On February 21, 2014 the court of Nizhniy Tagil has decided that Klimova is innocent. 

However, on November 7, three policemen came to Klimova’s house. They were interested in the project Children-404.  Three days later she received an e-mail and a telegram. According to these documents, the prosecutor’s office finds that in the community Children-404 “there is information that can be seen as propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”.  

On December 29, the first hearing on the new case against Elena Klimova took place. During the court hearing Roskomnadzor (Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications) provided the court with an expert opinion, written by Dr Lidia Matveeva.

Elena Klimova mentioned that she is really surprised by the fact that “the representatives of Roskomnadzor invited the professor of the Moscow State University Lidia Matveeva to provide an expert report, and that the expert in her report mentioned twice the word “sin” (once it was even “deadly sin”), stated that homosexuality is a “pathology” and listed New Testament in the list of references. I was also surprised by the Barinov’s words; he said that if a minor states that he is gay, it means that he has sex, and therefore these words are propaganda of homosexuality”. Among other “expert” refers to a single article on sexual pathology dated 1986 and Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1969). 

If this project is closed, Russian LGBT teenagers will be left without the only reliable and anonymous safe space, where they can find support and professional help.

Open City Docs Fest 2014

Aside from Mr. Suarez, bankers are the easiest target in the media right now and there's few things more news-friendly than an easy scapegoat, but Master Of The Universe flips the tables, giving the view on the worldwide economy from the other side. It isn't about money either. Rainer Voss isn't the hyper-stylized, blockbuster figure of Jordan Belfort, he's the genuine article.

Voss, a former investment banker, ambles through a block of empty offices in Hamburg, musing on the pitfalls of human nature that result in interconnected corruption. As bleak state-of-the-union addresses go, the proclamations from Voss are as revolutionary as they remarkably obvious. Of course banks aren't sentient, they're collections of people, making all the mistakes that people make.

Voss' dialogue, edited down from three years' worth of in-depth interviews with director Marc Bauder, is often littered with inaccessible Wall Street jargon, but it's also the necessary marriage of intelligence, experience, cynicism and imagery to bring the inner-workings of an industry swallowed by thoughtless greed to a wider audience.

I went from a tale of bankers fighting to control the world, to the story of teenagers fighting just to exist in it. The closing gala screening was Children 404, a documentary following the lives of LGBT teenagers in Russia, and their struggle in the face of institutionalised discrimination from the Russian government. Featuring anonymous, voice-over testimonies from Russian teenagers and on-camera appearances from a brave few, Children 404 is another chronicling of our times, and with its DIY aesthetic, is so empathetic that many of the audience, and myself, were moved to tears.

The existence of this film alone is a feat to be commended, as directors Loparev & Kurov incorporate handheld footage and talking-head interviews to show real-life characters, speaking with a world-weary wisdom they should never have needed. Watching Pasha, a Russian teen with acerbic, dry humour, who dreams of travelling and becoming a journalist, singing the Canadian national anthem to the Lenin Memorial leaves an indelible imprint.

Children 404 is currently still the subject of investigation by the Russian government, despite its main interviewee being cleared of all charges. If Masters Of The Universe breaks into the mainstream, it could change the way we look at banking culture. They're only two examples of real-life effects of films, and the Open City Docs Fest was full of incredibly affecting films, and a gala screening on your birthday is always nice too.

A Rant About a Film I Haven't Even Seen

Disclaimer: the following text (especially the ranty part) is subjective. You should probably know that by now.

So there’s this film coming out at Hot Docs in Toronto. It’s about Russian LGBT youth and it chronicles “Forty-five Russian teens and tweens [who] share their stories through anonymous interviews and video diaries.” Here’s its page: http://boxoffice.hotdocs.ca/WebSales/mobile/info.aspx?evtinfo=22737%7E446634ba-e848-4237-9b3c-72aceddb5263&epguid=b314c44a-eed5-4434-9c2c-cc86c0bf61ee I’m happy that this film exists because it’s a topic that’s particularly important to me and the one that could benefit from more people knowing about it. I plan on seeing it as soon as I get the opportunity to do so.

I am, however, really concerned about it. Here’s where the rant part comes in. I don’t want it to be yet another story about how horrible it is to be gay in Russia and how terrible Mr. Putin is. Putin is not THE problem, and the country will not suddenly become amazing when he steps down. The problem is that a huge part of the society is rotten from the inside and is unable to accept any change. If they’re including 45 leople in a 70 minute film (90 seconds per person), they’re not going to get much more than a “I’m gay. It’s horrible” blurb when the reality is so much more complex than that. That blurb provides with a possibility of a really simple answer like “oh, they should just change their government” or like “oh, they should just cancel those laws.” But the issue is so much bigger than that and the scariest thing about it is that there’s no simple solution.

I hope that it’s better than how it currently is in my head, but one of the screencaps on the website, the one with the huge poster of Putin, really scares me.
