people bang on about Little Women and Anne of Green Gables but I’m still waiting for the Netflix series adaptation of A Little Princess bc I genuinely think Sara Crewe is the dark academia millennial heroine we need right now. like this girl is born into massive privilege and then toppled completely and crushed by the system that she once profited from. she’s so into stories and learning for knowledge’s sake that her limited access to books is one of the things that weighs on her most when she loses everything. she’s proud and determined and resilient and unwaveringly solid in her knowledge that she has worth as a person no matter what her circumstances. she makes friends with the rats and sparrows. she can be a bit of a dick but she learns not to be. she tries no matter what to see everyone as an individual human being with an infinite galaxy of worth and beauty inside them.
fuck Anne Shirley, give me Sara Crewe energy.
(alsoyeah I’m obliged to point out that like most things from the past it is not perfect in terms of classism and racism and colonialism, which is why it needs a Netflix series to keep the story’s heart true and update some of the less happymaking content)
Betsy-Tacy and Tib
By Maud Hart Lovelace (1941). Illustration by Lois Lenski
Thinking about Betsy-Tacy and Tib today and how much I liked this book growing up AND how I’m getting major sapphic vibes from Tib. Short hair, not interested in dating, all about female friendships... am I remembering that correctly? Anyway I could be wrong but that’s now my head canon
literally no one:
me: i have four copies of anne of green gables because it has been one of my favorite books since i was thirteen and i continue to go back to read it like it’s an old friend.
no one:
me: and i have one copy of a little princess because i can not find any more aesthetically pleasing unabridged versions to add to my collection, but i have listened to it literally countless times bc i lost track at somewhere around 16 times in one year
no one:
me: And if u know where i can get a man unabridged copy of heidi regardless of its condition or cover pls let me know bc the only one ive ever seen is property of the university library
