analyzing all the fear/torture scenes in tadc ep8 because i have a lot to say (long ass analysis)
-
starting with caine. he was the one who created all of these scenes. i could get into the whole “he CAN actually see into their minds and mess with them” but 1. that’s already been established and 2. he did experience his own biggest fear. he’s terrified of the circus members hating his adventures, the circus, and him. he doesn’t want to be abandoned. and yknow what happens in this scene? all the circus start going off on him, saying how much they hate the circus and his adventures. everything he thought he was good at, that he was meant to be good at, torn down. shredded. he got his fear scene too.
pomni time! she gets thrown into a dark room where she sees gummigoo with his back turned to her. he turns around to face her and the side of his face is mangled. he doesn’t look like himself at all. he leaps toward her and starts biting her as more alligators join him. this might represent her survivor’s guilt. she doesn’t really seem to be fighting against the bites because she believes she deserves it. she thinks it should’ve been her instead of them, that she could’ve done something to prevent it. either that or caine truly doesn’t know what her biggest fear is (she is the “wild card” after all) and is just grabbing at straws.
ragatha’s is quite obvious i think. she’s sitting at the head of a dinner table, a terrified look in her eyes. at the table are 3 people on each side, each being stabbed with at least 1 knife. at the other end of the table is a dark, looking figure, clearly supposed to represent her mother. the knives fly out of each person and stab ragatha instead. the knives are holding her to the chair, and even if they weren’t, she’s too afraid to move. i think this all represents how she was manipulated and trapped by her mother. trauma-bonding, if you will. also a knife hit her button eye, which leads me to believe she actually doesn’t have one of her eyes (or at least is damaged) as a human, likely because of her mother as well.
oh my god gangle’s. i understood this one so perfectly but didn’t know how to fucking word it until i watched it about 10 times (psychological torture btw). she’s surrounded by paintings of her mask expressing different emotions, referencing her masking emotionally. the lights flicker as the paintings spin faster around her, becoming messier. the mask she’s built for herself is crumbling. she can’t tell what she’s genuinely feeling anymore. what’s the mask and what’s actually her? how can she tell when the mask is glued on and is slowly melting and burning onto her? the masks continue to spin faster, getting even more messy and distorted. she looks at the camera with terror, until the paintings move aside to reveal a truck hurtling towards her (which she doesn’t even try to dodge, i might add). this is the second time she’s been seen getting hit by a truck. it cannot be a coincidence. i think she tried committing suicide in this way. everything was too much for her. she was stuck in an endless cycle of masking and people pleasing that she couldn’t stop no matter how hard she tried. she saw that as her only way out. it was her only option. in summary, imposter syndrome, identity crisis, inability to unmask, and suicidal ideation. also hi i’m a gangle fictkin (idc about doubles) if you couldn’t tell O_O
zooble’s is another one that’s pretty clear to me. they’re drowning in a mound of body parts, surrounded by mirrors. correct me if i’m wrong, but the reflection in the mirror looks a bit distorted as well. this all represents their body dysmorphia, which has been discussed in previous episodes. none of the body parts look right. nothing ever has or ever will. the mirror being distorted shows how they view themself. they don’t recognize themself—they don’t want to. it’s not right.
there’s quite a bit to unpack with jax’s. he’s sitting on the ground, being circled by a crowd of laughing shadows. though, these aren’t just abstract shadows, no no no. they are specifically pomni, ribbit and kaufmo, the only people he considered his “friends” in the circus. they continue laughing at him, a ribbit looking shadow grabbing his ears and pulling off his skin. this represents his mask metaphorically being ripped off. he’s literally reduced to just the yellow part of him, completely emotionally exposed. he’s met with the shadows continuing to laugh at him and seemingly growing in size. he’s terrified of this. it’s why he never opens up, not even to pomni. he’s scared if he actually does, he’ll get just get left behind and laughed at by his friends. there’s definitely more to this but i cannot figure out how to word any more of my thoughts!
kinger’s is also lowkey here too. it’s not caused by caine like the other’s scenes are, he did this himself. it’s pretty heavily implied that he regrets something to do with queenie’s death. it might be that he blames himself, but for good reason. he genuinely might’ve done something to cause her to abstract. he broke the promise he made when they first got into the circus. now he’s trying to save everyone again, but once again fails. he does something wrong and deletes caine. that’s his fear. he didn’t want to let anyone down, but it keeps happening over and over. it’s a cycle, and it terrifies him.
FUCK YES LENORE SPECTRE TIME!!!!!!!
THE PARALLELS WHAT
happy nevermore thursday!!
part of the reason lenore is so self-sacrificial is because she doesn’t want to deal with the consequences of her own actions. food for thought.
