Chilitees | Sama Na
One of my favorite OPM Soul bands, I heard this back in my Highschool years we're Soul in the Philippines was at its peak but sadly due to the generation's interest Soul was set aside.

My Olivia-Newton John Educational Field Trip
Who?
What?
Me?
Damn right, I got an education on Olivia-Newton John. Especially since I am absolutely clueless. Had no intentions whatsoever to go to Xanadu-Xanadon't Night @ Route 196 yesterday, but missing Route's pizza, and missing my Ba'ba, and since Ronnie spent the afternoon at my place, I figured, what the heck.
First up were Chilitees- and this band is wicked! Dexter is always gonna be one of the most malibog drummers of this batch of musicians-and he doesn't disappoint. Nice guy pa. Ryan Ventura on bass- funny, I knew him way before he played bass and now he's got killer grooves. Those two make for great rhythms and then add Dan on Keys, Jon on guitars and Uela on vocals and you'll have some tight songs and they have great originals. It's not my usual type of sound- more on the R&B side of things- and yet I love the Ctees. They are such a fun band and always up to doing tribute gigs and theme I wonder all the time where Uela gets her voice- she's a tiny girl but that voice is massive! They did there originals and since it was a tribute gig they played "hopelessly devoted to you" the ONE Olivia song I know -but then again, one of my dirty little secrets is that I was part of "Grease" here in the 90s which ran for close to two months at Meralco and UP Theater. (I was part of the pit chorus since I have an aversion to being onstage for musical theater). Uela sang that song like it was written for her- with feelings, ha. Ang lupet nila.
Second up on stage was Lynn Sherman accompanied by Joniver "Blues Bad Boy" Robles. Calmer set but still amazing. After all, this IS Ms. Lynn Sherman of Ugoy-ugoy fame (still one of my all time favorite bands and the most bastos line up). Watching Lynn makes me feel guilty for not going to the gym. Not only does her voice have such strong tones- her arms do, too! Joniver felt like he was messing up-jam lang talaga- but these two are professionals and know how to put on a performance. I can't remember what Olivia song they did, though. Title escapes me. I'll ask Ene.
Then the Happy Happy Joy Joys- the pinakamakulit band ever-took to the stage. Before they even began their set aliw ka na: they were all wearing 80s aerobic gear- well, sort of. Complete with sweat band pa! I may just have nightmares of Eric's short shorts- and I don't know how he can jump around in those. Two words: Camel Toe. It's supposed to be their last gig and they plan to disband after last night- but there was a petition going around not for them to break up. Hayop. Pang rockstar talaga. Besides their usual set of Ta-E, Drowing etc (Tama ba spelling ko?) they did Olivia's "Let's get physical" therefore the outfits. This is not a serious band in the least. I love that they just have fun.
Waya Gallardo is a GODDESS. Hayop na boses yan. Accompanied only by Ronnie Dizon of the Ronnies on Keyboards and her set was busog. This woman has stage presence, super pipes and moves! I thorougly enjoyed her set- especially when she sang "Proud Mary" one of my fantasy songs to sing. Though after watching her do it, I know I can't ever sing it. Mali lang. Move over, Tina Turner. You can retire and pass the torch na. Waya will make you proud! My only sour note in the night was when she ended with spandau ballet- ugh. Nothing against Waya- I just HATE that song. I stepped out for air and the chilitees were outside and oo nga naman, as Dan Gil pointed out- she's got the genetics- she is the niece (?) of Celeste Legaspi. But I am now a Waya Gallardo fan officially.
And ending the night (not that it ended after their set) were The Ronnies fronted by the adorable Ene, whose production this was in cooperation with JP of Route 196. May production number pa! All the vocalists were called on stage (including Eric) to perform Xanadu- the title of the night. Ibang klase. They of course proceeded to do their regular set of 80s covers like Telephone, Bette Davis Eyes, and the like- and I was happy that they did Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Cousin Edsel cracked up when he saw me willingly dance. There goes my rock chick reputation. Wala na.
As true to form for any Ronnies gig that they are the last band- this can go on for another hour or so- since they are everyone's live Karaoke. Sing along na. Joniver and Lynn got back onstage and did a duet of "Suddenly". Ronnie stayed at the keys and the mic was passed around between Lynn, Waya, Ene, Joniver,Ige Gallardo, Jon (na may tinatagong baritone ha- and now neck to neck with Dexter sa pinakamalibog tumugtog na member ng chilitees). Wala nang awatan. But I was tired and I have work and a long sked today and the beginnings of a migraine were setting in. I think I had my fill of Olivia last night, so I headed on home.
Ene, JP, congratulations. Ang galing. Di pa rin ako sasama sa Sharon Cuneta night next month to perform, but I just may be there as audience.
Am I baduy yet? So baduy I'm cool again? Hah.
