"The Beijing Olympics was environmentally the least concerning" oh boi. 1) you forgot London 2) had to literally cut using work so people would see the sky and not a blanket of pollution and sent toxic metals in the atmosphere to make it rain. Anyway it was probably a joke but even if your hate of western self righteousness is often justified, this is an instance where china needs to take a long hard look at what it did.
Actually I think I’ve spent so much time trying to erase sui lu’s tears and Mac’s fall at London I think I just accidentally erased London from my mind altogether.
So yes, London was the least concerning environmentally, but as a beijinger and someone who was... you know, actually THERE during the olympics (I was a volunteer :3 I got to hold the torch very briefly :3 also i was on tv :3), I was there starting in May (there were sandstorms in April), and I would say the air was the worst in May, then gradually got better. By about late June it was standard mid-summer LA air.
Most of Beijing’s pollution comes from coal burning (as heat and energy source) and car exhaust There are no chemical plants around beijing city limits (most are in pretty rural suburbs such as Shunyi) and even the steel plants on the country side are shutting down/relocating further inland. So what the government mandated was that every private car (does NOT include buses or taxis) must only be on the road every other day (ie Monday is even-numbered license plate number only, Tues is odd numbered license plates only, etc). The city also built two more subway lines to reduce traffic and increase users of public transportation.
It’s only to top it off that the factories have to stop running on days that are particularly bad (ie if it hasn’t rained in a week).
There are literally 17 million people in beijing in 2008, compared to 8.347 million of NYC in the same year and 3.802 million of LA. Now imagine LA city air times about five and a half, and... ask yourself if that sounds about right.
Let me put something in perspective... there are so many people in beijing that during the G20 summit, the crematories in the suburbs was literally ordered not to run because the smog from burning dead people was contributing to the smog even with the mandated even-odd number days for private cars. Having a population density like LA or NYC is kind of a luxury in major Chinese cities. China always tops the CO2 emissions chart but when you order per capita, we rank below US, Australia, Canada, ie western countries that loves to give China shit about emissions, and also Taiwan, Korea, Japan, ie “good” Asian countries in white people eyes. So I mean....
The cloud seeding was mostly for making it not rain, because Beijing’s summer storms are er.... Iono if anyone is a new yorker, but it’s a lot like those summer storms in NYC where within 2 minutes you are soaked and there are areas that can get knee-deep in just 15 minutes. It’s pretty insane. Literally nothing gets done, nevermind outdoor events.
So I mean, it’s kind of not fair to imply that everything the Chinese did was only for face value instead of actually tackling the inevitable environmental problems that comes with dragging a country through industrialization?
Beijing’s subway is the second longest subway system in the world after the Shanghai Metro. There has been major overhauls to where factories can be located since “industrial parks” wasn’t really a thing back when we were developing. There’s a planned $315 billion - $630 billion green investments per year which pretty much translates to actual renewable energy (to get away from coal, which is the main source of air pollution in cities like beijing) and green tech R&D.
Hey, I keep seeing articles about Fu Yuanhui, the swimmer who talked about having her period the day before her race, and all of them say how it's so great that she broke this huge taboo in Chinese culture. But someone on here, I'm pretty sure it was you, made a post about how it's not a taboo in your culture... Can you explain which is right and if it's the second, why all the articles are saying this? And on a side note thanks for keeping us updated on chinese gym :)
I mean I grew up in a fairly big city (Beijing) and it’s like pretty normal to say “i can’t eat this/do this my aunt is visiting” (which is like an euphemism for saying my period came... I mean if the taboo is saying the word period.... in Chinese culture it’s about the difference between saying “I’m going to take a dump naoooo” and “I need to use the restroom”..... so yah hugeee taboo /rolls eyes)
Maybe they are saying rural china? But I mean the western media’s reaction was literally posted on weibo and all the replies were like “WHY ARE LAOWAIS BEING SO WEIRD ABOUT THIS?!” I can translate the comments.
How oppressed are western women that Fu Yuanhui became a feminist hero by mentioning her period
comments:
Do they not know there are menstrual days (basically a proposed law that women can take the first day of their period off work if they are in pain, but I think it was struck down actually because they thought it would be 1. hard to prove 2. reduce likelihood of employers hiring women in the work force) in China already? What taboo? At least not in the big cities.
It is unthinkable that western human rights, especially women’s rights, are in such a terrible state, we would like to express serious concern. (basically trolling the diplomatic language that western countries use towards China’s human rights topics) But then again, there are some elementary-school boys here that needs serious sex-ed. They can’t even control their own erections but asks girls to “hold” their period, srsly.
Laowais like to read other people’s actions with their own standards and understandings, it’s pretty gross.
Ads for pads are not allowed during prime-time? What the fuck do you think a Sufei (pretty much the kotex of China) is?
I used this excuse to slack off during PE

Maybe in western people’s eyes, China is pretty much the same as a Muslim country.
How the fuck did tampons became the mark of civilization? Is it because Americans like it so it became more elegant? I think Chinese girls don’t use it because it doesn’t seem sanitary, but of course, I’m not that shocked that the British paid extra attention to a topic like this.
你们歪果人真奇怪_(:з」∠)_
You foreigners are so weird _(:з」∠)_
Sponsors needs to hurry up
In western media’s eyes... what era is China in?
Who the fuck told you we don’t use tampons because of the hymen? Can we not feel it’s unsanitary to be sticking stuff inside??
sanitary cotton and sanitary pads are pretty much the same word in the Chinese language, tampons are “sanitary cotton rod”, it’s a rod that you push inside. It’s more comfortable than pads, but needs to be changed often or it will breed bacteria and odor, affecting your health. If I remember correctly, our diving team and swimming team has been using this for a very long time, and there’s been articles on it.
and so on.
OMG! I'm Black!?!
OMG! I’m Black!?!
You’d think we somehow copy paste these race-related stories off of each other as foreigners who’ve been to China but you would be wrong.
Every foreigner interacted closely with in China with an exception of none and more so black people have at least one of these stories. This is the second post on my ‘The China Experience’series. Look back with me through 2011-2014 when I was studying in China.…

MAKE NO MISTAKE
there are way more than 35 people that died at the Shanghai New Years Stampede.
If the media reports a dozen more, the mayor is out of a job.
Prayers for the "47" injured and all the victims families.
