In the late-seventeenth-century drawing room of Huntingdon Castle, southern Ireland, the colour cream has been used to enhance the sense of antiquity. The formal symmetry of the mantelpiece and the arrangement of smooth glazed chinaware stand out against the rough, cream-coloured plaster walls - as here, contrasts in texture, surface and form can provide an appealing focus for a room.
