Drinking Alone in Moonlight (translated from a poem in the Tang dynasty)
Author: Bai Li in the Tang Dynasty
With a pot of wines amidst the floral bushes, I drink alone with no one accompanied. Raising the chalice cheering the shiny moon, together with my own shadow we make a party of three. The moon of course would not actually drink, and the shadow merely follows my own body. Whatsoever I’m accompanied, then I can enjoy the spring moments before it’s too late. I sing and the moon lingers. I dance and the shadow scatters. We share the delights while we’re awake. We get drunk and then get apart. The fellowship endures. We expect to meet again in the milky way. I couldn’t wait for the joyful moments to actually see you in my dream.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival :) A Song of Waters - Mid-Autumn Festival in 1076 (lyrics translated from a song in the Song dynasty) Author: Shi Su in the Song Dynasty Preface: Stayed up to drink overnight in the Mid-Autumn Festival in the year 1076. Got drunk and wrote this song, also missed my younger brother. When would the moon be bright and round? With a glass of wine, I question the sky. Imagining the palaces in heaven, I wonder what’s their current chronicle time. I wish to ride the wind and fly up there but I fear the colds when being so high in jade and crystal mansions. I have more funs here dancing along with my own pure shadow in the mortal world. The moon turns around the vermilion attic, gets down to the carved door, and sheds its light onto the sleepless. As a moon, you should not bear any grudge on us. How come you always tend to be full when we’re apart? We mankind have our joys and sorrows. We get united and we get apart, just as the moon with its cycles. Likewise, the moon shines, dims, waxes, and wanes. Things have never been perfect since the birth of the earth. May everybody be well and long-lived. We share the same moon even when we’re thousands of kilometers apart. Remarks: 1. The full moon in a round shape means perfection and union to Chinese. Hence mid-autumn festival with the largest and brightest full moon all year round is deemed as the time to get together with family and friends. 2. The author was exiled to remote areas far away from the capital when composing the lyrics. 3. Heaven is a metaphor of the imperial palace being a top officer to serve the emperor. 4. The author was from a scholarly family and both his dad and his younger brother were famous scholars working for the emperor. 5.
