Memrise and ChineseSkill are available on Apple products for those who want to try non European languages. But the Arabic so far has not proved completely reliable so I'm not sure whether its trustworthy

I used to do Korean on memrise but I just couldn’t get used to their way of teaching. it was painful, not fun at all, very repetitive. but thanks for the ChineseSkill hint :)

What apps are you using to study mandarin? Is it better to use memrise or chineseskill?

I don’t really use apps to learn Mandarin. I have my phone dictionary (Hanping Lite), HiNative for when I have questions and need to ask a native speaker, and I occasionally use Memrise for learning vocabulary.

As for Chineseskill, I’ve never really used it. By the time I heard about it, I was a little too advanced for it. Using it just felt boring for me because I was able to test out of each level.

However, I do think it’s an excellent app for beginners because of how they structure the lessons. I will say, though, that it really shouldn’t be used on its own. It’s like duolingo: if you finish a language tree and duolingo is the only resource you’ve used, you’ll flounder for a little bit. So i recommend tracking down some textbook PDFs you could look at, as well as some websites that that offer vocab lists and grammar lessons in order to supplement what you’re learning through Chineseskill as well as receive a diverse set of explanations for grammar et. al (bc we all know that sometimes we just don’t get a grammar point no matter how hard we try).

As for which is better, I’d say neither is better or worse than the other. I will say, however, that they serve very different functions (at least in my mind). For me, Chineseskill is a good way to start learning basic vocab and grammar in an engaging way. Memrise, on the other hand, is more suitable for drilling vocab. It could technically help you learn grammar, but it’s hard to practice (which is where a textbook or workbook would come in handy).

tl;dr: it really comes down to your preferences but, no matter what you do, use a couple different resources so you can see a range of material and explanations for said material.

31.1.2017 | Finally, I am back! 😊Oh languages, how I missed thee 💕 For Japanese, I decided to stick to Memrise as well as the 'Le Japonais en Manga" textbook. I find that combining the two works well. For Mandarin, I started on the ChineseSkill app which is like DuoLingo and I really like that they show you the stroke order. The reason I didn't massively like Memrise for Mandarin in the end was that you learn the vocabulary in pinyin which does make it easier, but when you go to read something you don't have a clue. And even if I'm not able to speak Mandarin, I'd really like to be able to read and write it.

Free mobile apps to learn Chinese

I’ve recently started to learn Chinese and I’d like to share my impressions with two Chinese language applications: ChineseSkill and HelloChinese (both are free and available for iOS and Android).

I’ve tried ChineseSkill this summer and was completely disappointed. No speaking exercises (and since the tones are the most difficult part of the Chinese language, this is a serious drawback), no writing exercises, grammar and vocabulary pacing is unsystematic and confusing, tasks are too few and too primitive. (Besides, the version for my native language was broken.) ChineseSkill  is probably an ok app for those who studied Chinese before and who would like to refresh it, but for someone who, like me, just starts learning the language, it seems to be useless. After my short experience with ChineseSkill I’ve lost any faith in usefulness of language apps.

Recently I’ve tried HelloChinese and fell in love with it! This app has lots of speaking exercises, grammar is given logically, the lessons are well-structured, and you can always review the grammar, words and hanzi you’ve already learned. It contains lots of speaking exercises which allow to train pronunciation of syllables, phrases and separate words. HelloChinese also has many usability features that I love, such as the possibility to create lists of difficult hanzi or words, or the option not just to turn on/off pinyin but to change it’s color to almost invisible - which allows to concentrate on reading hanzi instead of pinyin hints yet leaves the hints in place in case they are needed. For a free app, it uses a very decent speech recognition algorithms. HelloChinese is a great app, very suitable for a beginner. I couldn’t even believe it’s completely free, and I would have gladly paid money if it weren’t.
