Finished this earlier this summer. By #bookcover #designer #chipkidd. A sequel to his 1st #novel The Cheese Monkeys. A novel I read when it first came out. I vaguely remember the broad strokes – coming of age story of a boy that attends a state college & enrolls in design curriculum. Takes place in the 50s(?). While I don’t remember the details, I do remember it being utterly charming & very readable. This one is very much in the same vein. Follows our young designer newly graduated into his 1st job for a mom & pop ad agency in New Haven, CT. #Design by Chip Kidd (of course), with cover #illustration by #charlesburns and #lettering by #chrisware – a real murderer’s row of talent. #graphicdesign #advertising #typography #summerreading (at Bedford-Stuyvesant) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfVPbgwOACK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Research - Chip Kidd
Chip Kidd is an American graphic designer who is best known for his book cover designs.
Kidd sees book covers as a brief view of the contents of the book, instead of the selling point. This makes his design different from other designers because they often hold a deeper meaning.
Darkness before the...
I love this design because it is simple. However, the audience will immediately be able to identify the contents of the book.
This book is a trade edition of the dark knight series. Kidd was able to be slightly abstract with his design because it is a well known comic series that most DC fans are familiar with.
By using a well known image of a black silhouette on a blue backgrounds, Kidd immediately conveyed that that the book was about Batman without using an image of the character. I like how the text is only on the spine of the book because it is not needed on the front cover. Furthermore, I like how the reader can only see part of the image unless they examine the book cover from front to back. I find this works well because it makes me want to pick up the book and I am more likely to think about reading it.
City on Fire
I like this design because it is clear to see that the cover has a meaning that links to the contents of the book. The cut out title to reveal the text makes me feel curious. I want to pick up the book and read it so I can understand the meaning behind the cover design, I love how I begin to question why the image looks like it istorn to reveal the authors name and how the fireworks link to the book.
I also like how the bright orange catches my attention which draws my eyes to the title. I also like how the spine only has imagery. This requires the reader to pick up the book off the shelf to have an idea of what the book is.
