“THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF WHAT WE CAN DO ON F*CKING SUPER NINTENDO”
elix is a two person combo comprised of cTrix, a chiptuner who hails from the land down under, and ferris, a Norwegian who creates EDM that spans multiple genres, including chiptunes.
Together they've been working on a project throughout 2014 that will hopefully be in the hands of fellow 16-bit musicians sometime this year, in the form of a public beta. And of what exactly? Why, a tracker for the Super Nintendo.
The video below is the first publicly posted demonstration, running on stock hardware. The audio you hear is raw audio output from the SPC700, the Sony produced sound chip found in every SNES. And that's it; no fancy tricks:
If you have the means, you can run the demo yourself, which can be obtained here. Anyhow, a few months later came a checklist of what the alpha at the time was capable off, along with stuff that was in the works:
- All 8 Channels + access to noise gen (working)
- Full ADSR control with INS import from SPC (working)
- Visual DSP Programmer for custom efx (in dev)
- Realistic emulated preview: WYHIWYG (working)
- ONE CLICK “compile ROM” from file menu (working)
- Standard interface with copy + paste/transpose (in dev!)
- Aiming to be public beta by 2015 ;-)
Then a few months after that saw the release of the second public demo:
The most recent video addresses some of the finer, technical details, while also serving yet additional aural delights:
BTW, if the name cTrix sounds familiar, there's a reason for that; he's mostly famous for an earlier creation of his, the gAtari 2600:
I was lucky enough to experience the gAtari firsthand, when cTrix performed at Blip Festival NYC in 2011. I still remember his set to this very day, and if you care to take a listen, you'll understand why.
