Here are the words of a Catholic nun who calls into question the validity of the Pro-Lifers’ motivations and reasoning:

"I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is." Here are only a few thoughts that immediately come to mind in response to this quote:

This quote does not take away from the basic, true fact that abortion is a matter of life and death. If a child is aborted, it dies and does not live. If a child is not aborted, it lives and does not die. Fundamentally, Pro-Lifers are indeed, Pro-Life.

Chittister equates “LIFE” to “good quality LIFE”, which is a deeply barbaric definition. Does that mean people with bad quality lives are as good as dead?

A child not fed, not educated, or severely lacking in any department has no less worth than a privileged child; a child who has a poor quality of life does not deserve death. I assume these are widely held opinions. I also assume that most do not deem it just to slaughter an impoverished, famished African child in order to prevent him from suffering. So why should we slaughter unborn fetuses for the same reason?

Chittister incorrectly polarizes the situation in order to hold all Pro-Lifers to a fiscal belief that not all Pro-Lifers actually share. Poor leap to make. If anything, Democrats on average only marginally prioritize education higher than Republicans do, which doesn’t justify Chittister’s black-and-white assumption.

God possesses infinite authority and power in Heaven and on Earth to redeem and save. He is able to generate good and perfect things from undesirable circumstances, so He is able to redeem many “poverty-sentenced” kids into abundant Life, as He has many times in the past. For the Christian, this must be obvious. The non-Christian should know this truth too in one form or another. Undesirable circumstances, by definition, are circumstantial. They are subject to change. A born baby at least has the potential to live through good and bad, just like the rest of us. An aborted baby is stripped of all its privileges, honors, potentials, experiences in the most sudden, decisive way: murder.
