Merritt may have been a thorny character; she was flawed, it's pretty much like how Carl is an a s s but he's also just some guy using whatever coping mechanism he knew and comfortable with

Odd references indicate the daily routine of life at the parsonage at this time. Breakfast — at least for Emily and Anne — was oatmeal porridge — a somewhat surprising choice to the fastidious Ellen.
