How bored would Chloe be at a fancy beach resort without Nadine. After TLL when the crew adjourns till their next gig Nadine goes home, Sam goes to go lie in the gutter outside a Wingstop somewhere, and Chloe? She chooses to spend a week sunbathing.

Except she is dead inside

All she can see is people on the beach proposing to their boo and she never noticed it before. Running into the waves with their partner. Playing in the huge blob-shaped pool with their hottie. And worse, she's fighting off flirts left and right.

She never did that before.

She takes refuge from the bouncy volleyball matches and strangers checking her out from deck chairs into snorkeling excursions. Underwater, it's just her and the hidden map of coral and sea urchins. Shiny fish slithering by. But she gets water in her ears and is reminded of Nadine.

Again.

"Nadine?"

"Frazer? It's late."

"Oh," Chloe chuckles in a way she hopes won't be too obviously read as nervous. She's in her room with a prescription for ear medicine in front of her. "Sorry, love--"

"Are you being held hostage? What the hell are you calling me for?"

"N-no. No, Nadine, shit, I just forgot about--about the time difference. I'm in the Caribbean."

"Oh."

Is she annoyed? Is she disappointed?

"Right," Nadine says flatly. "You sent me the turtle photo. I forgot."

"Rude."

"You woke me up and you're calling me rude?!"

Chloe is torn between the butterflies at hearing Nadine's voice again and the regret of making the phone call.

"I missed you."

Nadine scoffs so derisively Chloe is taken aback.

"Nadine, I'm--I'm being sincere here. Fuck. Don't make this harder than it is."

Dead silence on the line.

"Nadine? You--er," Chloe swallows. "Sorry. I shouldn't have--I'll call another time--I didn't mean to--"

"You called to say you miss me?"

Now it's Chloe's turn to be silent, rubbing at the ear infection prescription's label with her thumb.

"Chloe?"

"Yes, honey. I. I guess I'm not having the fun I thought I would. That I. Er. How are things going with. With your family?"

And she hears Nadine sigh.

"A mess."

"Descriptive," Chloe says.

"It's descriptive enough. I was at dinner when I got your turtle. I would have responded otherwise."

"Then you forgot."

"It was busy. In a..." Nadine sighs again. "In a bad way."

"One day at a time, love."

Chloe murmurs it while drawing circles in her bedsheet with her finger.

"Thanks, Chloe."

"Mm? For what? Oh did you want to get back to sleep?"

Nadine chuckles in that way that makes Chloe's heart swell and tremble.

"For thinking of me."

And Chloe is brought down to earth like the Pokemon move Smack Down on a flying type. "You're all I've been thinking about since I fucking got here. You don't get to--shit. I'm sorry. I'll let you go. Get some--get some rest, love. Your--your dad will come around. Eventually, I mean. And--yeah. Byeee."

She hangs up without giving Nadine the chance to respond, her entire face now as red and burning as her ear.
