Chlorhexidine Allergy

Chorhexidine allergies are a thing, not as annoying as a latex allergy though.

I know at least one vet with a chorhex allergy, though don’t think it was necessarily due to a long period of exposure, she developed it fairly early in her career, and uses alternative sterile preps like iodine scrub or ethanol.

It gets mentioned in vet school when we’re being taught how to prep for surgery (aka the class for how to wash your hands and get dressed) so presumably it can develop quite early. I’m fairly sure it just happens randomly with exposure, but fortunately we have a few alternatives.

Remove the dressing: tear open the sterile packaging, avoid touching the gel pad and adhesive surface to prevent contamination.

Align the puncture site: align the center of the CHG gel pad with the catheter puncture site to ensure complete coverage.

Fix the catheter: use the keyhole notch design of the dressing to naturally center the catheter to avoid compression. First press the gel pad part lightly to ensure a close fit with the skin.

Stick the film: smooth the transparent film from the center to the surrounding area, remove bubbles, and ensure that the dressing is flat and wrinkle-free.

Change frequency: usually change every 5-7 days, or according to clinical needs (such as dressing contamination, looseness, exudation, immediate change).
