It’s #NationalHippoDay! A #FunFact about the word hippopotamus, it has it’s origins in Ancient Greek. Hippos=horse and potamos=river. Or “river horse” in the English translation. Another #AnimalFact about hippos, their existence plays a vital role in the river ecosystem. They stir mud/ nutrients up as they move through the rivers (b/c they don’t swim, but actually walk on the bottom of the river). And they prefer to poop in or near the the river. Being (mostly) herbivores their droppings are beneficial to the fish and other river animals. (This is an older photo of mine from my adventures in #Botswana in 2009.) . . . . . #Africa #ChobeRiver #ChobeNationalPark #hippo #hippopotamus #awesomeanimal #wildlifeeducation #animallovers #animalpolis #animalsofinstagram #animales #exclusive_animals #wildlifeaddicts #wildlifephotography #animalworld #awesomeglobe #animalofinstagram #animalsmood #wildlifeonearth #wildlifeplanet #thecritterhaven #animalsaddict #planet_of_animals #wildlife_seekers #animal_in_world (at Chobe National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt7iTu9nuer/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1olu96ip4obuh

Doing a little #FlashbackFriday for #NationalBirdDay. I was fortunate enough to see several African fish eagles while spending time in #Botswana back in 2009. Most of the adventure had me spending time near or on the Chobe River. This is be far my favorite photo I took of this stunning species while there. #AnimalFact time! The African fish eagle is related to the bald eagle. Both species hunt fish and steal prey from other predators. African fish eagles have also been observed hunting water fowl and young crocodiles as well. Nesting behavior is similar to that of the bald eagle as well. Creating large nests in trees or on cliff sides, a mated oairbwill use the same best year after year. They add sticks each season, making for very large and heavy nests in due time. #Africa #Kasane #AfricanFishEagle #adventure #safari #eagle #birdofprey #birdday #ChobeNationalPark #ChobeRiver #nest #wildlifephotography #instabird #birdsofinstagram #wildlifeonearth #wildlifeseekers #wildlifeaddicts (at Chobe National Park)
