A letter to my BaSiC #1
Dear Brother or Sister,
if our life is chock-a-block
and we feel suffocated
it’s time
for us to
schedule in some spontaneity
some silence
make some time for nothing
that's not passive, it's active
procrastination is passive
letting our desires overtake our responsibilities
but this is different
the sabbath is a responsibility
if this space of our life is so cluttered
how will we have any room left for God?
why do we fear the silence?
the stillness
is it it because our wounds will open up?
is it because we will feel the weight of our emptiness?
are we too afraid to be bare before God?
for our consciences to go haywire
why do I run away like Adam, ashamed, in fear?
why do I numb myself with yet another slightly comical video on youtube?
why do I numb myself with scrolling yet another kilometre down my newsfeed?
as though it would satisfy, as though I can run away from this niggling reality this dissatisfied soul yes nakedness, feels shameful but there is a cloak of righteousness that’s been given to us yes wounds opened, hurt but if we leave them, they fester with infection yes, my conscience condemns itself for in myself, i cannot possibly stand before a Holy God
but there is a reality that exceeds and surpasses all else:
"For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve living God."
Hebrews 9:13-14 (ESV)
if that was a load of gibberish
maybe this will be clearer
“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water”
Hebrews 10:19-22
subjectively, my conscience may be chaotic
but
objectively, in Christ, I have been cleansed why do i need to feel this fear, this terror, this dread in this silence
for there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
there is fear, in reverence
but no more fear, in condemnation
“There is not fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
1 John 5:16
yours sincerely,
iC
