Chadley had just finished an intense workout to burn off the carbs that Charlotte had made him eat on their date. A four mile warm-up run on the treadmill, 300 sit-ups, 300 push-ups, and three hours of free weights and he finally felt like he defeated the enemy. Everything at the gym - that was easy for him. What he was doing now with his friend Finn, after their workout, was brand new to him and this new experience was making him nervous.
“I don’t know if I can do this Finn.” Chadley fell back into the seat in despair. His sweat covered body instantly clung to the leather surface; his face looking dejected. Defeat wasn’t a feeling Chadley was used to experiencing.
“Your first time is never easy Chadley. It will get easier with practice.” Finn reached over to his friend, placing his hand on top of Chadley’s. “I know you can do this. Just like you mastered the gym, you’ll get accustomed to this too.”
Chadley looked at his friend beside him. Finn smiled as he brought Chadley’s hand into his and placed it onto the stick. “Do you really think I can do it?”
“Definitely bro,” Finn replied. “And once you do and you feel how fun it is, you’ll wish you had done this sooner.”
“It’s so hard.” Chadley still wasn’t sure that he had it in him to keep going.
“Only because you’ve never done it before. My first time, I was nervous too.” Finn smiled at his friend encouragingly.
A broad smile appeared on Chadley’s face as he heard Finn’s encouraging words. “Thanks Finn. I’m ready to try again.”
“That’s great Chadley. Trust me, there is no better feeling in the world.” Finn removed his hand from Chadley’s letting his friend get a feel for the stick. “Now let’s try again. Press in the clutch, put the car in gear, slowly release the clutch as you press the gas,” Finn said to his friend sitting in the driver’s seat of his first classic sports car.
Chadley did as Finn instructed and after only a couple more hiccups, he had down the basics of driving a standard transmission vehicle. “This is so much fun!”
“Better than the gym, Chadley?”
“That’s not funny Finn.” Chadley’s joyous face quickly formed a frown at his friend.
“I’m sorry buddy,” Finn said patting a hand on Chadley’s shoulder. “I am curious though as to why you’d buy a vehicle that you didn’t know how to drive?”
“Cuz now I can workout on my way to workout,” Chadley stated proudly.
“Ah. Cuz of shifting gears?” Finn asked.
“Cuz it’s a muscle car bro.”
