A just society is one whose institutions honor two principles of distribution. One is a principle of compensation. It says that the institutions of a society should operate in such a way as to counteract the effects of god and bad fortune...The other principle is one of personal responsibility. It says that social arrangements should be such that people finish up with the outcomes of their voluntary acts.
