FLEEING THE CITY:  New Yorkers Temporarily Escaping COVID-19

Smartphone location data have found that hundreds of thousands of New York City residents left the city as it became the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. Approximately five percent of the city population has left since the crisis began, roughly around 420,000 people. 

New Yorkers primarily fled to Long Island, Upstate, or counties in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. A large number went further, most noticeably to South Florida. Not surprisingly, it was the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods that saw the largest decrease in residential population.

This map created by geospatial analysis company Descartes Labs for the New York Times, depicts the share of people who lived in New York City over a two-week period in February 2020 but who were not living there on May 1, 2020.

Covid, covid-19, ncov-19 - another interesting data visualization choropleth on Portuguese media (major websites) and which countries they focus the most their COVID-19 content on. This is year to date and constantly updated.

The representation using a choropleth isn’t bad, but the reason I’m putting this here is the choice of intervals. I understand it is the default algo of datawrapper, but why would you draw boundaries at 15.4% and 33.5%? There is no regularity to this.

And when you use intervals like this, the choice of intervals can make a huge difference to the message in the graph. 

A better way would be to use a continuous scale, and do away with the intervals altogether. That would take out the arbitrariness, and help readers compare states better

I came across this article and wanted to visualize this passage the author is pressing on

“But laws are only part of the calculus in a woman’s ability to seek an abortion.”

Fun Alabama facts

There is roughly 5 million people living in the county

52% of the population are women

76% of women age 18-49 use any contraception method (pills, condoms, sterilization, withdrawal, rhythm, etc.)

Only one clinic in Alabama is open on weekends (I didn’t find any open on weekends, but google maps might be trolling me)

It might seem like there are some options, I mean 5 facilities on roughly 2.5 million individuals, which not all of them are in a reproductive age. However, according to the article:

“In 2014, 59% of women lived in Alabama counties without a clinic, compared with 39% in the rest of the United States, said Elizabeth Nash, senior state issues manager for the reproductive rights think-tank, Guttmacher Institute.”

Just read the article, it made me wanting to do a visualization to add to the author’s point of accessibility.

PS. Compare with for example Georgia (28),  California (522), NY (249) abortion facilities.

Choropleth is not the best way to view this information. For starters, the legend is unreadable, so you don’t know which language is dominant where. 

Even if it were, for more than a handful of categories, choropleth doesn’t make sense. The information gets “lost”. I’d possibly make small multiples of choropleths showing dominant regions for each dialect. 

Then, there seems to be some missing data (which isn’t very apparent due to the black background), which isn’t explained. 

Finally, remember the old problem with choropleths - population distribution is not even. So colour covering big area doesn’t necessarily mean a large language.
