Bad Boys for Life (2020)
If you have fond memories of Bad Boys 1 & 2, this third installment please you. Except for Gabrielle Union (whose character should appear but doesn’t), everyone is back and the chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence hasn't faded at all. The action scenes are big, loud and exciting - exciting enough for you to at least partially overlook the script’s problems.
17 years after Bad Boys II, Miami detective Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) is retiring but his partner, Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) refuses to step down. He may not have a choice when Isabel Aretas (Kate del Castillo), a Mexican crime lord escapes from prison and sends her son, Armando (Jacob Scipio) to take revenge upon Mike.
I hated the first two Bad Boys but I recognize why this franchise has fans. It’s all about Smith and Lawrence’s chemistry. As a pair of buddy-cops, one who wants to take things easy and the other who is determined to keep policing the same was he did when he was just out of the academy, they work. Smith has aged well but he’s no longer the king of the summer and Lawrence has gotten softer and rounder. The picture uses this well. It also ties nicely into the film’s villain. I object to yet another film in which Mexicans cross the border to terrorize U.S. soil but at least it fits this trilogy - unlike Sylvester Stallone’s “Last Blood”. As villains, Armando and his mother are effective. You hate them so much you’re glad they're up against Mike and Marcus. If anyone can reduce the two of them to smoldering piles of red goop and shattered bones, it’s the titular bad boys.
In the beginning, the film’s tone is uneven. The violence is so brutal you get whiplash when it cuts to Marcus trying to enjoy retirement, acting bug-eyed and screaming when excitement comes his way and trying to be tender with his grandson. It also makes a severe misstep during the conclusion by trying to give depth and make us sympathize with a character that deserves no redemption whatsoever. The whole movie, our heroes are beyond reckless, tearing up the city, and (at least in Mike’s case) gunning people down without a thought but now it’s putting on the breaks and being sentimental? Get out of here with that.
Like so many sequels set decades later, Bad Boys for Life seeks to capitalize on nostalgia while reinvigorating the franchise. Overall it's successful. The leads are getting too old for this action-comedy thing but they play their parts well and the new characters introduced complement them well with cool stunts and some good lines. I suspect the box office receipts mean the next Bad Boys will be more of an ensemble piece.
I dreaded Bad Boys for Life after catching up on the early titles but although I’m not in love with this film, I’d describe myself as pleasantly surprised. (Theatrical version on the big screen, January 20, 2020)

Chris Bremner to Writer “Bad Boys 4″ and “National Treasure 3″
Chris Bremner is going to be very busy. Sony Pictures has started early development on Bad Boys 4 with Bremner returning to pen the script. He co-wrote Bad Boys for Life with Peter Craig and Joe Carnahan. Disney has also signed the writer to write the script for National Treasure 3, which is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
