i always wondered what in the good goddamn fuck audrey EVER saw in chris brody but i think i figured it out. he’s the only one who sees that she is truly special, and he loves her for it.
i think someone who grew up in a nightmare string of foster homes with no parents to save her probably spent a lot of her nights wishing and dreaming that she was special, that she had superpowers, or something, anything, that would let her control the horrible things happening to and around her. then she gets to haven and it actually happens. she IS special, she CAN stop the horrible things from happening, and she’s the ONLY one who can. she is the hero she always dreamed would come and save her. she feels powerful, and needed. but nathan, the other person who knows this, doesn’t seem to think it’s a big deal, so she doesn’t get to feel special.
chris has one conversation with her, and sits through a quarter of an interrogation, before his eyes light up and he makes it clear that he wants her because she’s special, and that’s what audrey wants in that moment. chris brody wants her because of how special she is. he needs her, specifically, in the long term. he makes a big deal out of it, and she gets to feel special.
chris looks at audrey and thinks “she’s the only one who could ever love me.” audrey looks at chris and thinks “he’s the only one who sees how special i am. i could try to love him if it means he’ll love me.” it doesn’t end up working out, because chris actually doesn’t want her to be special, he just wants her to himself, and audrey can/would/will never give up the chance to be a hero when people still need her just for the chance to be happy—especially not if she knows she won’t be happy, really, because while it feels so good to be acknowledged, what she actually wants is for someone to save her, and chris brody can’t do that.
