so suddenly, the internet is interested in learning about exotic bird husbandry...AND THAT’S MY THING

As someone with bird experience, I can confirm this kinda bullshit happens all the time, especially with cranes raised by humans (it famously also occurred with a whooping crane named Tex). To combat this, cranes that can’t be raised by their parents are raised by people in honestly kinda nightmarish crane costumes.

^if you’re interested in the story of another “crane wife” here’s a video on George and Tex, the first 3 minutes are the most interesting.

later in the video, they reference allowing the egg to be incubated by sandhill cranes...we don’t do that anymore because when the egg hatches, the chick believes itself to be a member of the species of the bird who raised it... and we get hybrids (because the biological species concept is a lie).
