In honor of the latest Humble Indie Bundle being released this week, which includes Terry Cavanaugh's vowel- and jump-button-less platformer VVVVVV1, I'm posting a track from the VVVVVV arranged album PPPPPPowerup2.
One thing I find interesting about this arranged album is that it contains roughly twice as many tracks as the original soundtrack. Needless to say, there are a few repeats. I suppose the benefit is that it ups the odds of finding a mix you like of any given track.
I particularly enjoy this remix of Pressure Cooker by Chris Geehan. It keeps a bit of the chunky electronic feel of the original soundtrack, but it really fills out and deepens the sound. I also appreciate the way it takes a simple theme, takes it places, and keeps it interesting throughout.
While the original VVVVVV soundtrack does an excellent job of presenting a neo-retro NES-inspired album in the grand Capcom tradition, I found the original Pressure Cooker track a little bland. While it boasts a good, driving beat, the melody was a bit meandering and left the overall track rather unmemorable. It works better in context, but the levels in VVVVVV are based around a central mechanic rather than a central theme. I think this song would work best at creating a mood for a themed level--I could see it working very well in a fire- or rock-based stage in a Mega Man game, for example.
This mix, on the other hand, emphasizes the song's hook, throws in a few extra layers of awesome, and adds a couple of quieter sections to mix things up. It makes the song more interesting in the general sense, and it gives it a far more "action-y" feel. This is good game trailer music, right here. More importantly, it's also better for simply listening to than the original.
I assure you, there is nothing wrong with my keyboard.
