Wonder what you think of this song? It's got rock elements, especially at the beginning.
Oooo, yes. This whole song is very much country rock music.
I have to say, though, I was listening to the intro and thought "oh my gosh this is basically Barracuda" and nearly burst out laughing XD The main guitar riff of Hooked On An 8 Second Ride sounded a lot like the main riff in the classic rock song Barracuda by Heart to me. Of course, I had to listen to Barracuda afterwards to compare, and I looked up the guitar chords after that to see how alike they were. It turns out they're in the same key and use a similar (though not quite the same) pattern of chords.
(The reason I wanted to laugh is because Barracuda is a pretty popular classic rock song, so it's just interesting/funny to hear a similar guitar riff in a country tune.)
Overall I would say I liked it! It has a kind of scrappy, energetic vibe that I enjoyed. The guitar solo at the end has a good, clean rock sound to it that I appreciated. I've saved it for future listening as well :D
Other songs this one reminded me of:
I couldn't help but pick up the line "he's hooked on a feeling" and immediately think of Hooked On A Feeling by Blue Swede, which is featured in Guardians of the Galaxy.
On a re-listen, the very start reminds me of Orion by Metallica—specifically the way the audio/volume fades in with the instruments already going nearly full-swing by the time the volume stabilizes.
Also on that re-listen, part of the guitar solo (3:17–25) reminded me of Eruption by Van Halen (20–28 seconds).
All the songs I've mentioned here are classic/older rock. Of these, I would say Orion is my favorite; it's completely instrumental, and it just goes so hard. It takes a while to fade in at the start and becomes so powerful once it gets up to full volume. It's punchy and draws out the sounds at certain points and goes on a few different grooves/riffs throughout which really gives it a lot of texture. (I like the others too, but with the exception of Eruption, I'm less likely to listen to those voluntarily. E.g., if they're on the radio I'll listen, but if I'm picking what to listen to, I would probably pick something else first.)
