Beach Goons - Hoodratscumbags

Saw these boys open for SWMRS a few months ago and damn do they know how to play a show! I met them afterwards and these guys are so genuine, it’s crazy. Their sophomore album Hoodratscumbags - Let’s go:

Track 1 : A.M. - Talk about a beach vibe! I love the vocals, they remind me of the band Mt. Eddy, scratchy and vibing. You can jam to this track in the heat of the summer and chill with that breakdown and solid ending crescendo. I love the Spanish and English combination of lyrics, it’s a personal touch and a part that makes this band who they are, A.M. is a hot day beach jam all the way.

Track 2 : Hunny Bunnies - Their most popular track from this album according to Spotify, this song has a swaying and simple vibe to it, but Beach Goons do it so well! Something about Chris Moran’s drumming on this track is so damn good! The bouncy beat and the smooth vocals work wonders for this song.

Track 3 : Vatos Tristes - The guitar in the beginning of this song makes it one of my favorites! David Orozco’s bass work too, hell yes! I love the simple vocals too, honestly, sometimes that makes the music more enjoyable, especially the way Beach Goons pull it off. A solid vibe!

Track 4 : Chunti - The lyrics on this track are someone my favorites (front Spanish): I swear, I’ll buy you a big house, ma / Don’t worry, I’ll buy you a real house / Sing to me of cardboard houses when we’ve made it, pa A gentle, swaying type of track, perfect for a lazy summer morning. I dig the guitar on this track as well.

Track 5 : Hrsb - This title track (?) is a kick in the face. The fast temp beat, powerful bass and clear and relatable lyrics make this track one of my favorites! Pablo Cervantez really knows how to make a song his bitch. Favorite lyrics: Don't need this new today I'm so annoyed / I drove out late at night / No gas, but I go as fast as I'd like I just love the whole vibe of this song, including the mellow bridge to the pick up once again.

Track 6 : Artificial Flowers - A cool title, this song is all gentle instrumentals and beautiful guitar work. I love when albums include an all instrumental track to break up an album and wow this track does just that. Summer evenings with fireflies and racing thoughts, this song brings you black down and you get lost in those pretty layers or sound and muffles voices. One of my favorites, absolutely.

Track 7 : The End - The drums on this song! Hell yes, another one of my favorites from this album. Not complex lyrics, but ones that Pablo belts the fuck out, a great song through and through, even love the little guitar trills. Favorite lyrics: And I'm tryin' my best / My best to reach things straight forward, but relatable none the less.

Track 8 : Miedo - I remember this one the most from when I saw them live, the energy in the room as crazy! This track is so strong, from the catchy lyrics to the bass and drums making the back bone for the verses. This whole album is full of favorites, I’ll be honest. Even the ending is subtle but wraps up the song well.

Track 9 : Chillón - Another instrumental track and I’m not mad at it! This one has a more melancholy vibe compared to Artificial Flowers and I love that this band isn’t afraid to put in tracks of just smooth, chill instrumentals. I love the jarring sort of beat that comes in once in a while, it’s a cool touch.

Track 10 : El Sol - A very Beach Goons track, this song has a theme facing depression: I don't know why, I don't know why / Don't feel a thing even though that I try / My room's a mess but so is my head / I need some help with my head So relatable and although not pretty, some of my favorite lyrics from the album. The drop in the middle of the song captures the similar feeling to the lyrics. A solid track and good one to end this underrated album.

Album Overview - I’m so damn happy I got to see these guys and find their music! I wouldn’t normally gravitate to this style of music but the beats, lyrics and overall instrumentals are ones to remember! If you haven't checked out this band, I highly recommend you do! Especially now, while we’re in the heat of the summer. :)

Review: Dark Museum by María Negroni

Dark Museum is a very little book but it is a rich one. In these five brief essays Negroni illustrates a highly developed Gothic sensibility immersed in primeval wonder

“packed with castles and lakes, crypts and laboratories, music boxes and evil gardens, urban ruins and boats like coffins ferrying magnificent dreams. Because in that atmosphere, it is my impression, something crucial materializes: a purely sentimental domain where it is suddenly possible to perceive, under any light, the critical link between childhood and atrocity, art and crime, passion and fear, and the desire for fusion and writing.”

Negroni writes in a twilight language that extends deep into the subconscious. Her “hallucinatory knowledge” relates to Gothic architecture, dream spaces, vampires, castles, labyrinths, underground lairs, and the Gothic significance of water. These are heightened reality codes that can lead to dangerous alternative mindstreams. Negroni knows that poets are conduits for strange energies, and being a conduit means opening pathways to the imaginal realms, which can attract ghosts and entities that inhabit our mind and invade our thoughts. The artist-host is often completely unaware, as the invaders are undetectable by ordinary perception. There is a lot more to say about this phenomenon but I don’t want to get too far off topic. It is worth noting that in post-Socratic Greek thought the psyche was often thought of as “the ghost that thinks.” Negroni explores these hidden pathways to poetry, for it is only in the hidden recesses of the mind that true poetry exists. Poetry, as seen through Negroni’s particular lens of perception, is a kind of psychic technology relating to the esoteric and the unknowable.

Chris Moran: Happy Birthday! The Best Birthday Performances in Baseball History

Baseball-Reference is a great thing. The Baseball-Reference Play Index is an even better thing. For the affordable price of $36 per year the answer to every baseball trivia question you can think of is right at your fingertips. I did not get paid to type that sentence. Perhaps I should have. Without further ado, let's plunge in. The title says it all.

Hitters:

1. Nomar Garciaparra, June 7, 2002. Nomar celebrated his 29th birthday in grand fashion, hitting three dingers and tallying eight runs batted in against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in a 22-4 rout by the Boston Red Sox. He added a walk for good measure. For his career, Nomar hit .311/.370/.578 on his birthday, but his team was victorious in just five of his 12 birthday contests. Garciaparra had two parts to his career. From 1996-2003, he was one of the best players in baseball, with a .323/.370/.555 slash line for a 134 wRC+ and 38.3 fWAR. Then he married Mia Hamm in the offseason, and dipped to .291/.343/.446 for a 104 wRC+ and 3.3 fWAR over the next six seasons. The marriage and the career decline are not related. Probably not. Mia and Nomar have three kids. I like their chances of being athletic and good-looking.

2. Joe Morgan, September 19, 1983. Morgan turned 40 in style, with four hits, including two home runs and a double, and he knocked in the go-ahead run in the 8th inning against Lee Smith, in the Philadelphia Phillies7-6 victory. Even in his penultimate season, Morgan could still play, as he produced a .230/.370/.403 line for a 120 wRC+ and 3.5 fWAR. One of the best players in baseball history, Morgan would find his way to the broadcast booth where he struggled mightily to analyze the game he once dominated. It was all for the greater good, as his ineptitude led to the creation of the fantastic blog FireJoeMorgan.com.

3. Kirk Gibson, May 28, 1995. Gibby ripped four hits, with two home runs and a double in the Detroit Tigers 14-12 loss. Interestingly enough, this game featured one Hall of Fame player in Ozzie Guillen, four others who deserve a place in Cooperstown in Tim Raines, Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, and Frank Thomas, and a couple other very good players in David Wells and Robin Ventura. This would be Gibson's final season, as the 38 year-old outfielder decided to hang them up after 1995. After his phenomenal 1988 season that was punctuated by one of the greatest home runs in baseball history, Gibson would only play two more seasons of at least 100 games. He now manages the Arizona Diamondbacks. They did not play on his birthday this season.

Pitchers:

1. Doug Drabek, July 25, 1995. Drabek, then pitching for the Houston Astros, celebrated his 33rd birthday by hurling a shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of 21 in his career. As an aside, Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez have combined for 21 shutouts in their career. He surrendered just three hits, and struck out nine hitters without walking one. The former 11th round draft pick is one of the more inconspicuous CY Young winners, as he took home the award after a 22-6 year with a 2.76 ERA. He is the father of former top prospect Kyle Drabek who has had the misfortune of undergoing not one, but two Tommy John surgeries.

2. Marcelino Lopez, September 23, 1966. No, I had not previously heard of Marcelino Lopez. If you have, more power to you. Lopez dominated the Baltimore Orioles in a 2-0 shutout victory, striking out twelve hitters while allowing just five baserunners, two via the walk. This would be the only game he pitched on his birthday. The Cuban native had a journeyman career, pitching for six teams in nine big league seasons. His most successful year was 1965 when he finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Curt Blefary.

3. Ron Guidry, August 28, 1977. The New York Yankees hurler shut out the Texas Rangers 2-0 on his 27th birthday, allowing just two baserunners and striking out eight. Louisiana Lightning was pretty great that season, with a 2.82 ERA in over 200 innings. He was even better the next year, with a 1.74 ERA, nine shutouts, 8.8 fWAR and a sparkling 25-3 record. Gator would make three appearances on his birthday, and earned the victory in each one. Joe Torre brought him on as the Yankees pitching coach for the 2006 and 2007 seasons, but when Joe Girardi took over, Guidry did not retain his position. Now, he drives Yogi Berra around during Spring Training.

So those are the best performances a baseball player had on their birthday. By the way, here's another interesting baseball birthday fact: neither Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth ever hit a home run on their birthday. Probably because they were each born in February, one day and 39 years apart.
