Pain is what the world inflicts upon us.
Gotham is not a city, Gotham is a law unto itself and for generations, the Argents were one of the many crime families that ruled with an iron fist. From the Bowery to Bristol, the Argent name was one known and associated with power.
When Gerard Argent was mysteriously killed, Gotham PD gritted their teeth and battened down the hatches in preparation for a power struggle. No one expected for Argent Enterprises to do a 180 and go legit.
Except that is what they did.

For several years, under the leadership of Chris and Victoria Argent, AE and the Argent name became associated instead with philanthropy and development.
(And if Victoria continued the old ways from the shadows, no one knew. Not even her husband. Until it got her killed.)
And as he lay wounded in the alleyway beside the body of his wife, his daughter curled up under his arm with tears on her face, Chris Argent realized that however much of a difference he could make through legal means, it would never be enough.
And so Batman was born.
