“Adventure Time” and Theology: “Giuseppe as Christ”
I was on Twitter the other day, chatting about Adventure Time and spirituality—something about which I see very few essays—when the user La Sultana reached out to me and shared an essay she had written entitled “Giuseppe as Christ.” This work compared the plight of Christ in the gospels to that of Giuseppe, from the low-key masterpiece “Thanks for the Crabapples, Giuseppe!” (It also included the wonderful drawing I’ve included here.)
La Sultana was cool enough to let me broadcast that essay here. I think this is a fascinating argument that takes something secular, like Adventure Time, and uses it as a lens through which we can see theological or spiritual topics.
This essay, which was written by a person embedded in the Christian ethos, is also very fascinating because it discusses the struggle of being a transgender Christian. I have not seen a lot about this perspective out there, and I think it’s an important one to consider. The origins of Christianity were decidedly subversive, and like Zizek, I think there’s a lot there to upend systems of oppressive and make the world a better place—if only it can be wrestled from the arms of those in power!
Have a read and tell us whatcha think! I’d love to see more works like this.
The difference between lust and sacred sex is quite simple. Lust is an animal desire that says “I want it.” Sacred sex is a conscious love that says “I love you.” Do you see the difference? One is an expression of pure emotion, the other is desire that seeks to acquire. One gives, the other takes. Sacred sex, true divine sexuality, is an expression of the divine. It is pure love, it is Christic. Lust is animal, it wants desire, it wants sensation, and when it’s satisfied, it walks away.
