Dākini in Sanskrit means “Sky Dancer.” She is the most sacred aspect of the feminine principle in Tantrayana, embodying both humanity and divinity in feminine form. The Dākini guards the most private details of spiritual practice, so that only those with the purest motivation are able to penetrate its essence. She appears when a spiritual practitioner is making the transition from an intellectual to an experiential approach.

She may appear differently in various contexts; when needed, she may appear as fierce and intense or playful and nurturing. At other times she may appear outrageous or repulsive in order to cut through conceptual thinking and mistaken perception. She may appear as a human being, as a goddess, either peaceful or wrathful, or she may be perceived as the general play of energy in the phenomenal world.

5 (5) How Many Must One Cut?

At Sāvatthī. Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the blessed one:

How many must one cut, how many abandon, and how many further must one develop? When a bhikkhu has surmounted how many ties is he called a crosser of the flood?

[The Blessed One]:

One must cut off five, and must develop a further five. A bhikkhu who has surmounted five ties is called a crosser of the flood.

Spk: one must cut off the lower fetters (identity view, doubt, the distorted grasp of rules and vows, sensual desire, ill will). One must abandon the five higher fetters (lust for form, lust for the formless, conceit, restlessness, ignorance). In order to cut off and abandon these fetters one must develop a further five, namely, the five spiritual faculties (faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration, wisdom). The five ties are lust, hatred, delusion, conceit and views. A bhikkhu who has surmounted these five ties is called a crosser of the flood.

The difference between lust and sacred sex is quite simple. Lust is an animal desire that says “I want it.” Sacred sex is a conscious love that says “I love you.” Do you see the difference? One is an expression of pure emotion, the other is desire that seeks to acquire. One gives, the other takes. Sacred sex, true divine sexuality, is an expression of the divine. It is pure love, it is Christic. Lust is animal, it wants desire, it wants sensation, and when it’s satisfied, it walks away.

‘Tantra’ doesn’t mean what English thinks it means. In modern English, ‘tantra’ often implies sexuality. In its original context, tantra means a woven continuum, a system, a loom, a method that interlaces everything. So Tantrayana is about transmutation.

Tantrayana is a method of accelerated awakening that uses imagination, embodiment, and the full spectrum of human emotion as fuel for liberation. Nothing is rejected. Everything is woven. Even poison becomes medicine.

oAo Chinnamasta, Acephalic Tantra Goddess

Chhinnamasta (Sanskrit: छिन्नमस्ता, Chinnamastā, "She whose head is severed"), often spelled Chinnamasta, and also called Ch(h)innamastika and Prachanda Chandika and Jogani Maa (in western states of India), is a Hindu goddess. She is one of the Mahavidyas, ten goddesses from the esoteric tradition of Tantra, and a ferocious aspect of Parvati, the Hindu Mother goddess. The self-decapitated nude goddess, usually standing or seated on a divine copulating couple, holds her own severed head in one hand and a scimitar in another. Three jets of blood spurt out of her bleeding neck and are drunk by her severed head and two attendants.

Chhinnamasta is a goddess of contradictions. She symbolises both aspects of Devi: a life-giver and a life-taker. She is considered both a symbol of sexual self-control and an embodiment of sexual energy, depending upon interpretation. She represents death, temporality, and destruction as well as life, immortality, and recreation. The goddess conveys spiritual self-realization and the awakening of the kundalini – spiritual energy. The legends of Chhinnamasta emphasise her self-sacrifice – sometimes coupled with a maternal element – sexual dominance, and self-destructive fury.
