R.I.P. Betty White

1922–2021

"Aw man. Betty White's work was really important to me. I even dressed as her for Halloween when I was, like, 9. Then, years later, she was one of the final hosts of my first season as a writer at Saturday Night Live. It felt like I was dreaming. Before we went in to pitch to her, ‪Seth Meyers ‬was telling everyone in the writers room that they were bringing in several former cast members to help take the load off Betty, which made a ton of sense as this was an elderly person and [hosting SNL is] a physically demanding job. We all did the thing where we had to cram into Lorne Michaels' office (ugh, so obnoxious in my honest opinion) and pitched our ideas to Betty, and she was—wow—so incredibly energetic and dynamic and hilarious. When we all went right back into the writers room, kinda stunned and in awe, Seth said something like 'Uh ok, well, maybe she doesn't need all that help.'

I remember talking to her the next day with Bobby Moynihan in his office and, her assistant or whoever, handed her a Snickers bar and she opened it. Then—Betty White—asked us if we wanted to split her Snickers bar with her! I still regret saying no.

Over the course of the week, I stressed about it, but I thought 'Well damn, I'll probably be fired at the end of this season,' so might as well ask (through the proper channels) if I could get a photo with her. The producers said MAYBE. I remember being told which commercial break to wait outside her dressing room. Then in the chaos, hearing one of the crew saying 'Where’s the writer? Where's the writer?' and being whisked in to get a photo. She was so sweet and calm in all the insanity. I ran out of there, and for some reason, hearing myself called 'a writer' in that moment was so empowering.

I wrote there at SNL (badly) for 2 more years and never asked to get a photo with a host again, because I had already hit the jackpot.
